DETROIT LIONS (7-3-2) 26, NEW YORK GIANTS (9-3) 7 - The Lions took a quick 13-0 lead in the first quarter when Leroy "Ace" Gutowsky plunged over from the two yard line and Earl "Dutch" Clark shook loose on a 40-yard touchdown romp. The Giants would close the gap at 13-7 in the third when Ed Danowski connected with Ken Strong for a 42-yard touchdown pass. However, the Lions defense would score twice in the final frame on a blocked punt and intercepted pass to end the Giants Championship reign.

1935 GREY CUP GAME (December 7 at Hamilton - 6,405)
Winnipegs 18, Hamilton Tigers 12 - For 14 years, a total of 10 teams from Western Canada traveled East in search of the Grey Cup. All 10 times they returned home empty handed. Western clubs were outscored by the opposition 236-29 in these games as the balance of Canadian football power clearly rested in the East. All this changed in 1935. The Winnipegs stepped onto a rainy Hamilton Amateur Athletic Association Grounds to meet the hometown Tigers, winners of five Grey Cups. Sixty minutes later, the Pegs left the field as the first Dominion football champions from Western Canada. The Winnipegs had seven imports in the lineup. Fritz Hanson from North Dakota State College had over 300 yards in punt returns, including one he returned close to 80 yards that helped seal the win for the Pegs. Winnipeg was up 5-0 before many of the 6,405 fans in attendance reached their seats. Jack Craig let the opening kickoff bounce around, allowing a Winnipeg player to recover the ball on the Hamilton 15-yard line. Bob Fritz threw a pass to Bud Marquardt in the end zone to give the visitors the lead. With the Pegs up 5-3 in the second quarter, Russ Rebholz threw a pass to Greg Kabat for Winnipeg’s second touchdown of the game. After a convert and an exchange of rouges, the Pegs had a 12-4 advantage at halftime. Hamilton looked to get back into the game in the third quarter. The Tigers blocked a kick with Eddie Wright covering the ball and sliding to the Winnipeg 15-yard line. Four plays later, Wilf Patterson crossed the goal line for a Hamilton touchdown. Frank Turville added a single to close the gap to 12-10, setting the stage for Hanson’s dramatic run. Standing deep in his zone, he caught the ball, sprinted to his left, wheeled and turned the other direction than ran straight down the field. He avoided one would be tackler en route to a touchdown. Hamilton earned a safety, giving the Tigers one last opportunity in the dying seconds of the game. With the Tigers on Winnipeg’s four-yard line, Hamilton failed to score on a line thrust, then an onside kick attempt. On the final play of the game the Tigers again attempted an onside kick, which was recovered by Hanson. He ran it out of the end zone 10 yards to give the Pegs the victory. Winnipeg would prove it was no fluke, winning again in 1939. Although the West would only win the Grey Cup three of the next 19 years, 1935 was a turning point in the history of Canadian football.
