(LOS ANGELES) - The Los Angeles Rams scored 26 points in
the first quarter, then breezed to a 33-17 victory over the Green
Bay Packers in the NFL finale for both teams here Saturday
afternoon. The defeat was the ninth for the Packers in one of
their most disappointing seasons in history. Rated as possible
title contenders in early speculation, the club won only two
games, both from the Baltimore Colts, and tied the Chicago
Bears. They finished in undisputed last place in the western
division of the league. A crowd of 23,069 swelled the Rams'
home attendance for nine games, six in league play and three
exhibitions, over the half million mark. In addition, a national
television audience watched the game which gave the teams its
eighth triumph against three defeats and a tie. Although
eliminated from title consideration a week ago, the Rams
wasted no time to cinch Saturday's game. Los Angeles rolled
up 19 points on three long drives in the early minutes, then
gave up a touchdown when Stretch Elliott intercepted a lateral.
The Rams immediately marched to their fourth touchdown and
at the end of the first quarter had victory all but stowed away
with a 26-7 lead. Los Angeles was contained thereafter, but it
made no difference. Although the Packers intercepted six
passes and recovered three fumbles, their own attack failed to
function except on one occasion. That time, on the first play of
the second quarter, Tobin Rote hit Billy Howton with a long pass
on a touchdown play which covered 80 yards all told. The Rams
had a marked edge in yardage, 463 to 289. Most of it came
through passing as they connected on 17 out of 32 tosses for
305 yards. The Packers completed only five out of 24 passes
and had four intercepted.
The Rams scored a touchdown each of the first three times
they had the ball. They took the opening kickoff and marched
62 yards in seven plays. They moved 70 yards in seven plays
the next time they got it. And they drove 66 yards in five plays
the third time. Myers scored the first tally, sprinting 31 yards
around end. Van Brocklin passed four yards to Fears for the
second after Smith had passed 49 yards to Hirsch to the
Packer 18 for the big gain on the drive, and Van Brocklin
passed 16 yards to Quinlan, who ran 30 yards more, for the
third. The next time the Rams took over, however, their
backfield trickery backfired and the Packers got into the
scoring act. Elliott intercepted a pass on Los Angeles' 15 and
easily ran across the goal. It was only temporary relief, however.
The Rams marched 58 yards in five plays the next time they
got the ball and at the end of the quarter it was an overwhelming
26 to 7. Towler's 40 yard run to the Packer four set up the
tally. Younger skirted right end on the next play to score.
The Packers suddenly bounced back, however. On the first play
of the second quarter, Rote hit Howton with a pass and Howton
loped into the end zone to complete an 80 yard scoring play.
Neither side threatened seriously the rest of the half and the
score remained 26-14 for Los Angeles at the intermission. The
Packers threatened early in the third period, moving on the ground from their four to the Los Angeles 22. Barton, Reid and Cone alternated on the drive on which only one pass was tried, Barton dropping Parilli's long one in the open. On the 22, however, Parilli's errant pitchout lost 21 yards and the assault was stopped. Dawson ran back to the 25 on the next play, but with fourth down coming up, the Packers tried a field goal. Lane burst through to block Cone's attempt from the 35, then picked off the loose ball at midfield and raced into the end zone to make it 33-14. Hanner's interception set up the Packers' final three points midway in the fourth period. Cone kicked a field goal from the 40.
