GAME RECAP (MILWAUKEE SENTINEL)
(LOS ANGELES ) - Defensive halfback Will Sherman sank Green Bay's hopes with a 95-yard runback of a pass interception and quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, with his aerial wizardry, led the Rams to a 49-21 victory over the Packers Sunday. Sherman's spectacular theft of a Tobin Rote pass late in the first quarter broke a 7-7 tie just as Green Bay was about to take the lead itself. The Rams were never behind from there on it, much to the delight of 45,209 fans who turned out to see the windup of the NFL season here.
STANDING OVATION
Van Brocklin got a standing ovation, in contrast to the boos he heard earlier this season, when he left the game in the last quarter. The Dutchman from Oregon completed 17 of 22 passes for 289 yards and three of the Rams' seven touchdowns. Two of Van Brocklin's mighty throws were for 56 yards each, to speedy Bob Boyd. The loss dragged Green Bay into a cellar tie with Los Angeles in the Western Conference. Each team has four wins and eight defeats. Green Bay recovered a Ram fumble and Rote guided the Packers 77 yards for the opening touchdown. The Rams took the kickoff and marched 70 yards to tie the score.
TURNING POINT
Sherman's pass interception proved the turning point, and from then on the Rams could do no wrong. Not once did Los Angeles have to punt. Three Ram rookies were standouts. Fullback Joe Marconi scored three touchdowns on short plunges, end Leon Clarke scored a touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Van Brocklin,
and halfback Tom Wilson broke the NFL record for yards gained in a game. The ex-Army flyer gained 223 yards in 23 carries, breaking the mark of 218 yards in 26 carries set in 1950 by Gene (Choo-Choo) Roberts
of the New York Giants against the Chicago Cardinals. Green Bay, which defeated the Rams earlier in the season, came back after the half and went 69 yards for its second touchdown. Rote passed 13 yards to Al
Carmichael for the TD.
CONE SCORES
Early in the first quarter, the Packers went 58 yards with second-string quarterback Bart Starr at the helm. Fullback Fred Cone plunged the final five yards. The Rams chalked up 33 first downs, one short of the club
record.
