(LOS ANGELES) - The Green Bay Packers won the National Football League's Western Division title Saturday by whipping the tough but outmanned Los Angeles Rams 35-21. The Rams actually stymied the Packers running attack, but Green Bay took to the air to score what was an easy victory. The Packers got a scare in the fourth quarter when the Rams scored twice but the effort was not good enough. This was the first Western Division title for the Packers in 14 years. The crowd of 53,445 broke into a chorus of boos in the fourth quarter when officials called a pass interference penalty on Ram DB Vernon Valdez. One spectator became so enraged, he rushed onto the field but was nabbed by policemen. The penalty gave the Packers a first down on the Ram four-yard line. On the second play in the series, halfback Paul Hornung dived over from the one for a touchdown. There was more excitement on the ensuing kickoff — and more boos — when Ram halfback Jon Arnett was ejected from the game for indulging in fisticuffs with Packer end Willie Davis. The Packers, who jubilantly carried coach Vince Lombardi off the field at the end of the game, played strictly conservative ball during the third quarter which was scoreless. Bart Starr completed 8 of 9 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. His perfect 158.3 rating is the fourth such time it has happened in Packer history, but it has not been matched since.
