Green Bay Packers (5-1) 28, Washington Redskins 17
PRE-SEASON - Monday September 7th 1963 (at Cedar Rapids, IA)
(CEDAR RAPIDS, IA) - The Green Bay Packers needed lightning-bolt touchdown strikes of 83 and 80 yards Saturday night to show the Washington Redskins who is boss in the NFL. The Packers thrilled a crowd of 13,500 in Kingston Stadium by coming from behind with two fourth-period scores to win their final preseason game. But the Pack, winners of five straight since their upset by the College All-Stars, will have to look sharper than they did in the first three quarters if they hope to stay unbeaten long in the NFL Western Division race that opens next Sunday against the Bears in Green Bay. They fumbled away the ball four times and averaged only 30 yards on three punts. The sponsoring West Side Civic club again enjoyed a perfect September evening. This was the largest crowd in the series of four pro football promotions, and it insured a sizeable profit for local charities, youth and athletic projects. Many of the fans couldn't resist pulling for an upset. Elijah Pitts' 83-yard touchdown sprint with a Redskin punt, with a minute and a half to play in the half, gave the Packers a 14-10 halftime lead. Norm Snead, who sat out the first half with a sore throat, sent the Redskins back in front early in the period with a 7-yard scoring toss to Fred Dugan. The Packers took the lead for keeps when Tom Moore slipped over from the two after Starr had set up the score with a 47-yard pass to Dowler.
