Chicago Bears 2, Green Bay Packers (0-1) 0
PRE-SEASON - Saturday August 7th 1971 (at Milwaukee)
(MILWAUKEE) - The Bears forced quarterback Frank Patrick behind his own end zone for a third quarter safety Saturday night, then held on for a 2-0 victory over Green Bay. The break which ultimately spoiled Dan Devines' Packer coaching debut in a bitter defensive struggle came when Bobby Joe Green boomed a 69-yard punt that rolled dead on the Green Bay 11-yard line late in the third period. Willie Holman nailed Patrick for a loss to the one, but the Packers momentarily got out of that hole when a defensive holding penalty gave them a first down on their own six. But on the next play, Patrick faded to pass under a fierce rush and three Bear linemen forced him behind his own end zone for the game's only score. Karl Kremser missed a 53-yard field goal try and Dale Livingston attempt from 43 for Green Bay. Kremser had tried another from 33 yards out in the first quarter, but was smeared after holder Donnie Anderson fumbled the snap. Reserve Bear quarterback Bobby Douglas was sacked 10 times for 95 yards in losses.
