Minnesota Vikings (7-2) 3, Green Bay Packers (3-5-1) 0
Sunday November 14th 1971 (at Minnesota)
(MINNESOTA) - The Minnesota Vikings turned back repeated Green Bay scoring threats and then got a 25-yard field goal from Fred Cox with 4:02 to play for a 3-0 win. The fired up Packers drove to the Minnesota 16, 21, 1, 10 and 8 yard lines but still came away without a point. The Vikngs arose with a deflected field goal attempt, a goal line stand, two interceptions and a fumble recovery - each time with their backs in the shadow of the posts. Charlie West, starting for the first time at strong safety, turned in the key defensive play when he intercepted Scott Hunter's pass intended for Rich McGeorge in the end zone and raced 50 yards to midfield. The Vikings, who until that point had made only 52 yards total offense, got first downs on Gary Cuozzo's 12-yard pass to Bob Grim and later on Dave Osborn's six-yard run to the 26 before calling in Cox, who has scored in a record 121 straight games. The field goal opened up Minnesota's lead in the Central Division with a 7-2 record. Rookie John Brockington carried the Green Bay offense almost single-handedly by picking up 149 yards on 23 carries. But when the Packers got close, the Vikings stiffened.
