Cincinnati Bengals (2-1) 28, Green Bay Packers (0-3) 7
Sunday September 26th 1976 (at Cincinnati)
(CINCINNATI) - DB Ken Riley raced 53 yards with an intercepted pass for a touchdown, and Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin enjoyed his finest professional outing with 78 yards, powering the Cincinnati Bengals to a 28-7 win over the Green Bay Packers. The Bengals spotted Green Bay a 7-0 lead in the first quarter then overcame a rain-swept first half to boost their record to 2-1. Riley's 32nd career interception allowed the Bengals to tie the game, and a fumble recovery by veteran DE Coy Bacon on the Packers' six set up the go-ahead score. Griffin, the all-time major college rushing leader from Ohio State, carried 20 times, scoring his first NFL regular season touchdown on a brilliant second-effort, nine-yard play in the third period. S Tom Casanova picked off a pass by backup QB Carlos Brown and returned it 33 yards for the final touchdown with just over one minute to play. A stingy Cincinnati defense limited the winless Packers to 71 yards rushing and minus 35 passing for a net total of 36. The Bengals sacked quarterback Lynn Dickey and Brown a total of five times, limiting the Packers to only two third-down conversions in 13 attempts.
