1978 IN REVIEW
Youth was served, and with it came an energy that catapulted the Packers to their best start since 1962. Green Bay raced out to a 6-1 record and a three-game lead in the NFC Central before costly mistakes led to a second-half slide that caused the club (8-7-1) to miss its first trip to the playoffs in six years. Since Day One, Bart Starr had been rebuilding. The 1978 Green Bay Packers hardly resembled the group he had inherited in 1975. Only four starters from that club continued to start this season - Larry McCarren, Rich McGeorge, Willie Buchanon and Johnnie Gray. The 22 starters in 1978 averaged less than 25 years of age, the first time that had happened since the mid-1960's. In fact, only ten starters from the finale in 1977 found themselves still holding their jobs in 1978.
THE ONE-HIT WONDERS OF 1978
Randy Vanwarmer...Anita Ward...Samantha Sang...Walter Egan...Terdell Middleton...all were one-hit wonders in 1978. Middleton, an obscure running back entering the season, was the only Packer to rush for more than 1,000 yards between 1973 (John Brockington) and 1995 (Edgar Bennett).  A third-round pick out of Memphis in 1977, Middleton barely made a dent his rookie year, running for 97 yards on 35 carries, a dismal 2.8 yards per carry. The leading rusher for the Packers, Barty Smith, only ran for 554 yards, so the competition in 1978 was heated. Middleton won the job coming out of training camp, and set the league on fire to start the season. Middleton ran for 94 yards in the season opener against Detroit. Game Two saw him shred the Saints for 114 yards. After two mediocre games, Middleton rumbled for 148 yards in a Week Five rematch with the Lions. Two weeks later, he exploded for 121 yards and four scores as the Packers improved to 6-1 with a 45-28 thrashing of the Seahawks. The next five weeks saw the Packers go 1-4, and Middleton failed to rush for more than 87 yards in any of the games. His last "great" performance of the season came in a key Week 13 Central Division grudge match with the Vikings. While the teams ended up in a 10-10 tie, Middleton carried the ball 39 times for 110 yard, and scored Green Bay's only touchdown. Down the stretch, Green Bay stumbled to a 1-2 record instead, and lost the division title on a tie-breaker. Middleton was held to a total of 103 yards in the three games. Despite his 1,116 yards, the Packers drafted Eddie Lee Ivery in 1979's first round, and would have relied on him as their lead back, except Ivery tore his knee up in the first game. The Packers went with a committee of backs, and Middleton only had one shining moment. In Week 11, the Packers upset the Vikings, 19-7, thanks to Middleton's 135 yards. It was his last 100-yard performance as a pro. He would run for only 45 yards the rest of the year, which saw him end with a season total of 495 yards. 1980 would not be any better. Middleton appeared in 11 games, carrying more than 10 times only once, and only accumulated 155 yards. Middleton's Packer career came to an end in 1981, when he rushed for a mere 181 yards on 53 carries, and did not score a rushing touchdown.  Middleton made a comeback with Tampa Bay in 1983, but only appeared in two games, rushing twice for four yards. The following spring, he played with the Memphis Showboats (USFL). He ran for 46 yards on 18 carries, putting the finishing touches on a career that had one shining moment in the sun.
