Arizona Cardinals (3-9) 20, Green Bay Packers (4-7-1) 17
Sunday December 2nd 2018 (at Green Bay)
(GREEN BAY) - The Green Bay Packers' latest crash-and-burn, a 20-17 home loss to the even more lowly Arizona Cardinals, has cost coach Mike McCarthy his job. The Packers (4-7-1) fell at Lambeau Field despite being 14-point favorites over the Cardinals (3-9). Josh Rosen led the Cardinals to the go-ahead field goal, a 44-yarder by Zane Gonzalez, with 1:41 remaining. On third-and-23 earlier in the drive, Rosen scrambled to his right and found timeless veteran receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who made a diving, 32-yard reception. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers had plenty of time to go for at least a tie, even with the ineptitude the Green Bay offense showed for much of the day. Rodgers converted a fourth-and-5 with a 7-yard pass to tight end Jimmy Graham, moved the chains with a completion to tight end Robert Tonyan and gained 11 on a scramble. That got the Packers into field-goal range, but Mason Crosby was wide right from 49 yards out as time expired. The loss was the last straw for the Packers' front office, which fired embattled Packers coach Mike McCarthy after 13 seasons. Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who has three-plus years of head-coaching experience from 2012-15 with the Miami Dolphins, will serve as interim head coach. It was the biggest victory of the season for first-year Arizona coach Steve Wilks, whose only two previous wins came against the San Francisco 49ers. Rosen was 11 of 26 for 149 yards. David Johnson pounded away for 20 carries and 69 yards. Arizona took its first lead late in the third quarter. Starting from its 35, Rosen avoided a sack and ran 33 yards to the Green Bay 32. On the next play, running back Chase Edmonds broke three tackles for a gain of 29 to the 3. Following a false-start penalty, Edmonds scored from the 8 on the next play to give the Cardinals a 17-10 lead with 1:54 to go in the period. On the ensuing Green Bay possession, Rodgers hit Randall Cobb for an apparent gain of 36 on third-and-11. Instead, offensive lineman Jason Spriggs -- who replaced injured Bryan Bulaga -- was flagged for holding. That led to a ninth consecutive third-down failure. The Packers finally got going on their next possession. First, they snapped their third-down slump with an 11-yard completion to Davante Adams on third-and-5. Next, a reverse by Marquez Valdes-Scantling gained 21. Wide receiver Jake Kumerow, a former Division III standout making his NFL debut, then caught a pass for 11 more yards to the Arizona 46. Moments later, Rodgers hit Adams at the sideline for a gain of 19. Finally, on first-and-goal at the 8, running back Aaron Jones ran over linebacker Haason Reddick, tying the score at 17 with 5:26 remaining in the game.
