TORONTO 20, Wheeling 0 (8100) - Ron McCauley, Joe Williams and Ernie Wade scored the Toronto TDs. Williams and McCauley were the big rushers for the Rifles, the pair combining to grind out 150 of the 197 total yards

Ft. Wayne 16, NORFOLK 6 (11,000) - Norfolk RB Al Ford piled up 100 yards on only 12 carries to lead all rushers the first weekend. Ford had a long romp of 59 yards.

Charleston 27, PROVIDENCE 16 (9,800) - Ron Pennington led Charleston, scoring two TDs and passing for two. Pennington took over from starting QB Ron Miller in the first quarter with his team trailing 6-0. Indians QB Tom Kennedy and E Joe Fowlkes combined on an 84-yard TD, while DB Jim Adams intercepted three passes.

Philadelphia 35, NEWARK 30 (8600) - The Bulldogs, last year's champions in the United League, amassed 381 yards passing and added another 132 on the ground. Pacing the Philadelphia attack was QB Bob Brodhead, who went 24-of-45. Four of Brodhead's passes were for touchdowns.

PHILADELPHIA 42, Wheeling 28 - H. D. Murphy scored on passes of 52 and 79 yards to lead Philadelphia. John Henry Martin of the Ironmen set a league record for rushing with his total of 182 yards, and he added three TDs

CHARLESTON ROCKETS (14-0) 24, TORONTO RIFLES (11-3) 7 - The Rockets defensive unit intercepted four Toronto passes, recovered a fumble, blocked a kick and effectively bottled up Toronto's offense. With one exception, the Rifles never got inside the Charleston 39-yard line. The exception was a 43-yard run by Rifle FB Joe Williams, the CFL's leading rusher. But Williams' touchdown came in the fourth quarter with Toronto down 17-0

UNITED STATES FOOTBALL LEAGUE (1965) - Created by future league developer extraordinaire David Dixon, the USFL was unveiled in an April 11, 1965 article in the Dallas Times-Herald. The league, which would kick off in January 1966, would have franchises in Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, New York, Miami and Anaheim. Games would be held to a strict two-hour limit, with the title game on Memorial Day. An organizational meeting was supposed to be held in May, while Dallas Cowboy GM Tex Schramm said the NFL may develop its own winter-spring league. Neither plan got off the ground.
