2004 IN REVIEW
The Packers would start the season with a solid road win on Monday Night Football beating the defending NFC Champion Carolina Panthers 24-14. However, the Packers would struggle losing the next four games, including three at Lambeau Field. The Packers would end their losing streak in a big way beating the Detroit Lions on the road 38-10. The win in Detroit would be just the spark the Packers needed as they won their next six games, including a thrilling 34-31 win over the Minnesota Vikings on a Ryan Longwell 33-yard field goal as time expired, to climb back to the top of the NFC North. After losing two of three games, the battle for the division title came down to one game as the Packers faced the Vikings on the road in nationally-televised game on Christmas Eve. The game would go back and forth as Brett Favre passed for 365 yards as the Packers won again 34-31 on Ryan Longwell's 29-yard field goal as time expired. The Packers would go on to finish the season with a second-straight 10-6 record as they closed the season with a solid win over the Chicago Bears. In the playoffs, the Packers would face the Vikings again after two thrilling regular season wins. However, this time the Packers would dig themselves an early hole as they fell behind in the first Quarter 17-0. The Packers would never recover as Favre had four passes intercepted in a crushing 31-17 loss at Lambeau Field.
WISCONSIN'S OTHER PRO TEAMS
The Green Bay Packers were not the only professional football team to call Wisconsin home. The Badger State has been home to numerous franchises in outdoor and arena leagues:
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
* MILWAUKEE BADGERS (1922-26) - The team played its home games at Athletic Park, later known as Borchert Field and team was notable for having a large number of African-American players. The team was caught up in the 1925 NFL championship controversy. The Chicago Cardinals, after losing to Pottsville, played two hastily-arranged games against clubs which had disbanded for the year. The Badgers used four high school students in their game. The NFL forced the Badgers owner to sell the franchise, and the team folded after the 1926 season. RECORD (TITLES): 16-27-6 (None)
* RACINE LEGION/TORNADOES (1922-26) - The team's official name was the Horlick-Racine Legion. In 1925, the franchise was turned over to the Racine Exchange Club, but was inactive that season. The Racine franchise was reactivated in 1926, but after winning their first game, the Tornadoes lost four in a row and disbanded in late October. RECORD (TITLES): 15-15-6 (None)
* KENOSHA MAROONS (1924) - The team was originally based in Toledo, Ohio and called the Toledo Maroons from 1922-1923. The Maroons played in the NFL only during 1924. The Maroons dissolved after posting no wins in five games. RECORD (TITLES): 0-4-1 (None)
AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
* MILWAUKEE CHIEFS (1940-1941) - The team played its home games in the Dairy Bowl at the State Fairgrounds. Originally formed as an expansion team in the American Professional Football Association for the 1940 season, the new team joined the Cincinnati Bengals and Columbus Bullies in becoming charter members of a new major league AFL, which forced the APFA to fold. After two season, AFL owners were optimistic about the league's long-term future, and a new franchise was awarded to Detroit for the 1942 season. After the United States entered World War II, the league was put on hold and never returned. RECORD (TITLES): 11-5-1 (None)
ARENA FOOTBALL
* MILWAUKEE MUSTANGS (1994-2001) - The team never finished lower than eighth in attendance, regularly drawing in the 14,000's and 15,000's. The team even led the AFL in attendance in 1996. The AFL folded the team after the 2001 season, due to arena issues. RECORD (TITLES): 46-66-0 (None)
* GREEN BAY BOMBERS (1998-2000) - The Bombers played in the Professional Indoor Football League in 1998, and the Indoor Football League in 1999 & 2000, RECORD (TITLES): 32-13 (Won the IFL title in 1999)
* MADISON MADDOGS (1998-2000) - The MadDogs lost the PIFL championship in 1998 and moved to the IFL in 1999. RECORD (TITLES): 26-18 (None)
* LA CROSSE RIVERRATS (2000) - They were a 2000 expansion member of the Indoor Football League (1999-2000). RECORD (TITLES): 2-12 (None)
* LA CROSSE NIGHT TRAIN (2002-2003) - The team played in the National Indoor Football League. RECORD (TITLES): 5-23 (None)
* GREEN BAY BLIZZARD (2003-Now) - The team struggled initially as an AF2 expansion team, drawing only 2,957 fans per game. By 2008, the team was drawing over 6,000 fans a game. In October 2009 the team announced that unless the team found additional investors that they would be forced to cease operations. The Blizzard found new investors in an ownership group of local businessmen and in late October it was announced that Titletown Football Group, LLC had purchased the Blizzard from the ownership group which was headed by former Packer Brian Noble. The team was scheduled to join the new Arena Football League in 2010, but moved to the Indoor Football League instead. While they enjoyed early success in the league, they struggled in the latter half of the 2010s, going 10-36 from 2017-18. They rebounded with a playoff team in 2019, before COVID-19 cancelled the 2020 campaign. They came back with another losing team in 2021 (5-9), finishing 10th in the league. RECORD (TITLES): 134-154-0 (9-9 in the playoffs) (None)
* MILWAUKEE BONECRUSHERS (2008-09) - The Bonecrushers were an expansion team in the Continental Indoor Football League, and play in the U.S. Cellular Arena, known as the "Bone Yard". The team has struggled at the gate and on the field, and became the Chicago Cardinals in 2010. RECORD (TITLES): 4-19 (None)
* WISCONSIN WOLFPACK (2009-2010) - Based in Madison and playing in the CIFL, the Wolfpack name and brand was used for two teams: an indoor football team in the Continental Indoor Football League and a traditional (outdoor) football team in the Mid Continental Football League. The Wolfpack won its only home playoff game, beating the Fort Wayne FireHawks, 25-24, before falling to the Commandos in the 2010 CIFL Championship Game, 54-40, in Cincinnati. On December 9, 2010 that Jordan Kopac would return to coaching the Racine Raiders in 2011. This effectively marked the end of the Wolfpack as a franchise.- RECORD (TITLES): 16-9 (1-2 in the playoffs) (None)
* MILWAUKEE IRON/MUSTANGS (2009-2012) - The Iron were announced as an af2 expansion team in March 2008 when the team's ownership group announced an agreement to play at the Bradley Center. In 2010, the Iron moved to the new Arena Football League. The team re-named itself the Mustangs in 2012 and went dormant for the 2013 season. RECORD (TITLES): 28-40 (1-1 in the playoffs) (None)
* LA CROSSE SPARTANS (2010-2011) - Playing in the Indoor Football League. Former NFL player Gilbert Brown was announced as the head coach. After four games of the 2011 season it was announced that Brown would be taking a leave of absence from the team for personal reasons, and that his brother Kyle Moore-Brown would be switching from assistant coach to head coach of the Spartans. On August 30, 2011, GM and co-owner Chris Kokalis announced the formation of the Cedar Rapids Titans, including former Spartans members Xzavie Jackson, Travis Miller and Mike Polaski. Kokalis said the Spartans franchise will "cease to exist", but also said that the team was up for sale. RECORD (TITLES): 8-20 (None)

SUPER BOWL 39 (February 6, 2005 at Jacksonville)
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (16-2) 24, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (15-3) 21 - Deion Branch had 11 receptions for 133 yards and the Patriots’ defense forced four turnovers en route to becoming the eighth team to post consecutive Super Bowl titles. The Patriots matched the Dallas Cowboys (XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX) as the only teams with three Super Bowl victories in the span of four seasons. The Eagles threatened first, driving to the Patriots’ 8 late in the first quarter. On first down, Mike Vrabel sacked Donovan McNabb for a 16-yard loss and, after a penalty overturned an interception, Rodney Harrison stepped in front of a pass for an interception at the Patriots’ 4. Early in the second quarter the Eagles drove 81 yards, keyed by Todd Pinkston’s 40-yard catch, and capped by McNabb’s 6-yard touchdown pass to L.J. Smith on third-and-goal for a 7-0 lead. The Patriots responded by driving to the Eagles’ 4, but Tom Brady fumbled on a fake handoff attempt and Darwin Walker recovered. Later in the quarter, a 29-yard punt by Dirk Johnson allowed the Patriots to drive just 37 yards, keyed by Branch’s 7-yard catch on third-and-3, and capped by Brady’s pass to David Givens on the right side of the end zone to tie the game with 1:10 left in the half. New England began the second half with a 9-play, 69-yard drive, including four receptions, two on third down, by Branch, and capped by Vrabel’s 2-yard catch. The Eagles put together a 10-play, 74-yard drive later in the third quarter, keyed by Brian Westbrook’s 4-yard catch on third-and-3, and followed on the next play by his 10-yard touchdown catch to tie the game. On the ensuing drive, Kevin Faulk caught screen passes of 13 and 14 yards, and had a 12-yard run, and Corey Dillon capped the possession with a 2-yard run with 13:44 remaining for a 21-14 lead. The Patriots’ defense forced a three-and-out, and Branch’s 19-yard catch set up Adam Vinatieri’s 22-yard field goal with 8:40 to play. Teddy Bruschi intercepted McNabb’s pass at the Patriots’ 24 with 7:20 remaining. The Eagles forced a punt, and beginning at their own 21 with 5:40 to play, needed 13 plays to drive 79 yards, capped by McNabb’s 30-yard touchdown pass on a post-pattern to Greg Lewis with 1:48 to play. Christian Fauria recovered the onside kick, but the Eagles’ defense forced a punt. Dexter Reid downed Josh Miller’s 32-yard punt at the Eagles’ 4 with 46 seconds left, and Harrison intercepted McNabb’s pass three plays later to clinch the title. Brady was 23 of 33 for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Branch earned MVP honors with his Super Bowl-record-tying 11 catches. McNabb was 30 of 51 for 357 yards and three touchdowns, with three interceptions. Terrell Owens had nine receptions for 122 yards.
