2009 IN REVIEW
The Green Bay Packers saved their season, which at the halfway point was crumbling, in large part because of a couple of significant adjustments by coach Mike McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson. They were sitting at 4-4 after a stunning loss at Tampa Bay when McCarthy made a significant change to the offense. He all but ditched his deep passing game, which was causing quarterback Aaron Rodgers to take all kinds of hits because of a shoddy protection unit, and returned to the roots of the West Coast offense. Rodgers and the passing game began to click, and the second-year quarterback went on to throw for 4,434 yards, the second most in team history. About a month earlier, Thompson brought back veteran right tackle Mark Tauscher, who was rehabbing the knee injury he sustained the previous season. McCarthy put Tauscher back in the lineup to start the second half of the season, and it helped solve the sack problem. More than anything, those moves propelled the Packers to an 11-5 regular season and a spot in the playoffs, where they lost an NFC wild-card game to the Arizona Cardinals. THE BRETT FAVRE SOAP OPERA - PART TWO
After leaving the Packers in a flurry of bad feelings and finger-pointing, the future Hall-of-Famer appeared to have found the fountain of youth in the Big Apple. Favre threw six touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals, a personal best and one fewer than the NFL record. The Jets roared out to an 8-3 record, including a win over the previously undefeated Titans. However, the Jets lost four out of the last five games of the season including the final game against the Dolphins, who had acquired Chad Pennington after he was released from the Jets to make room for Favre. In those five games Favre threw eight interceptions and only two touchdown passes, bringing his season total to twenty-two of each. Favre had complained of shoulder pain and had an MRI performed after the season, which revealed a torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder. However, it was stated that Favre would only need an arthroscopic procedure and not major surgery. After the season, Favre told Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, "it may be time to look in a different direction" regarding the quarterback position.
FEBRUARY 11 - Favre informed the Jets that he was retiring after 18 seasons.
APRIL 28 - Favre asked for and was granted a release from the Jets Reserve/Retired list, freeing him to sign with any team. Amid speculation that Favre would once again attempt a comeback, it was reported that Favre had undergone arthroscopic surgery to complete a tear in his throwing arm.
JUNE 15 - Favre stated he was considering playing again, most likely with the Minnesota Vikings.
JULY 28 - Favre informed Vikings officials that he would remain retired.
AUGUST 18 - WCCO-TV, a CBS affiliate in Minneapolis reported that Favre would sign with the Minnesota Vikings later in the day. ESPN.com later reported the same news, as Favre would sign a contract with the Vikings pending a physical. Favre officially signed with the Vikings later that day. He signed a two-year, $25 million deal.
SEPTEMBER 20 - Favre surpassed former Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall for consecutive starts at one position with 271.
SEPTEMBER 27 - Favre threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to WR Greg Lewis with 2 seconds remaining to give the Vikings a dramatic come-from-behind 27-24 victory over the 49ers.
OCTOBER 5 - With a 30-23 victory over the Packers, Favre became the first quarterback in NFL history to defeat every one
of the league's 32 franchises since the NFL first expanded to 32 franchises in 2002. Monday night’s game between Minnesota and Green Bay was the most-viewed television program, sports or otherwise, in the history of cable television. The game drew a 15.3 rating and had 21.8 million viewers.
JANUARY 17 - Favre led the Vikings to a 34-3 win in their first playoff game against Dallas, throwing four touchdown passes and no interceptions. It was his first-ever playoff win against the Cowboys, following three playoff losses when he was the quarterback of the Packers. Favre also became the first quarterback to win a playoff game at the age of 40.
JANUARY 24 - Favre and the Vikings subsequently lost in the NFC Championship game in overtime against the Saints. Favre's final throw against the Saints resulted in an interception which effectively ended any chance of a Vikings victory in regulation. Despite the loss, Favre set playoff records for pass completions and passing yards, held by Joe Montana.

SUPER BOWL 44 (February 7, 2010 at Miami)
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (15-3) 31, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (16-2) 17 - Who Dat? Those are the Super Bowl champions - the New Orleans Saints - for the first time in franchise history. Drew Brees connected with Jeremy Shockey for the go-ahead two-yard TD pass with 5:42 left in the fourth, lifting the Saints to a 31-17 win over the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. Tracy Porter then sealed the fate of the Colts, picking off four-time MVP Peyton Manning and returning the ball 74 yards for a TD with 3:12 left, ending Indianapolis' chance for a second title in four years. The Saints rallied from a 10-0 deficit behind a sparkling performance from Brees, who tied a Super Bowl record with 32 completions, going 32-of-39 for 288 yards and two TDs. The Saints outscored the Colts, 15-0, in the fourth. Manning finished 31-of-45 for 333 yards with a TD and the costly interception. Dallas Clark had seven catches for 86 yards, while Joseph Addai accounted for a big portion of the Colts' offense. He had 13 rushes for 77 yards and a TD and caught seven passes for 58 yards, but Indianapolis couldn't gain a second title in four years after topping Chicago following the 2006 season, in this same stadium. Instead, Brees, the MVP of the game, became a hero to the city of New Orleans and its fans who suffered through an incredible amount of pain.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 14
Florida 29, LAS VEGAS 15 (12160) - The first meeting of the season between the Tuskers and the Locomotives established Florida as the top team in the UFL. The Tuskers ran out to a 22-0 lead after three quarters and did not look back, and, in the process, took over first place in the league by themselves. The hero in the first half for Florida was kicker Matt Bryant, whose three field goals and an extra point accounted for 10 of Florida’s 16 points. Once again, the Tusker defense was stout, giving up just 140 yards to Las Vegas on the Locos’ first seven possessions. Florida quarterback Brooks Bollinger, a week after throwing four touchdown passes to four different receivers, recorded three more touchdown strikes to three different wide receivers.
