2011 IN REVIEW
After a summer of labor unrest that put the season in doubt and coming off a Super Bowl season, the Packers kicked off the 2011 campaign with one of the most stirring contests in franchise history, outgunning the previous Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints, 42-34, on a Thursday night. The offense was never a problem, scoring at 24 or more points in every game but one - a 19-14 loss to Kansas City. The defense was another story. In March, the Packers cut A.J. Hawk to avoid a $10 million guaranteed salary. The next day, he was re-signed for $33.75 million over five years, an average of $6.75 million per year. Meanwhile, Nick Barnett was released, went to Buffalo, started all 16 games and led them in tackles with 130, His three-year contract averaged $3.8 million. When the season ended, Green Bay was ranked dead last in the NFL for only the third time in franchise history. The 1956 team ranked 12th of 12 teams. The 1983 team ranked 28th of 28 teams. The 2012 team gave up 411.6 yards per game, slightly worst than the Patriots (411.1). Ironically, both teams were the number one seeds in the postseason. Green Bay did set a team record with 31 interceptions. Back to the offense. Aaron Rodgers led the NFL in passing with a 122.5 rating built on 45 touchdown passes, six interceptions and a 68.3 completion percentage and joined Brett Favre, Bart Starr, Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung as MVPs. The Packers won their first 13 games of the season to extend their winning streak from the previous season to 19, the second longest in NFL history behind the 21-game winning streak by New England, and also tied the record for the best start to a season in NFC history that the New Orleans Saints had set in 2009. Despite the record setting offense, their 15-1 record, and having homefield advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, the Packers failed to repeat as Super Bowl champions. In fact, the Packers became the first team to finish with at least 15 victories and not win a playoff game, as they were beaten in their first playoff tilt by the eventual Super Bowl Champion New York Giants 37-20 at Lambeau Field.
