CANADIAN FOOTBALL (1930 - 1949)

CANADIAN FOOTBALL - 1933

The Toronto Argonauts lost their first two games of the season, only to storm back and win eight straight, including their first Grey Cup win in 12 years....The Winnipeg St.John's were a no show at the annual meeting of the Manitoba Rugby Football Union. It was later learned that the St.John's had suspended operations for one season while they got their finances in order....The MRFU made attempts to get another organization to take over the operations of the St.John's for the 1933 season. Although there was interest in taking over the team on a permanent basis, there was no interest in being custodian of the team for just one season....In August, the players of the St.John's were dispersed between the Winnipegs and the Garrison. The Garrison was an Army team and only servicemen were eligible to play on the team. The Garrison claimed the only player who qualified (Alf Woods) and the remainder of the players ended up in the camp of the Winnipegs....With an abundance of players available the Winnipegs operated two teams in 1933. The best players ended up on the Winnipegs who were wearing brand new blue jerseys (they weren't blue & gold until 1934). The remaining players wore the old green jerseys and they played under the name Shamrocks...The Winnipeg St.John's failed to re-form in 1934....The British Columbia Rugby Football Union did not have regular season play, but did play 8 games in 3 multi-game series to determine a western semi finalist, and later another final for the league championship.

1933 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday December 9 at Sarnia - ATT: 2,751)

TORONTO ARGONAUTS 4, SARNIA IMPERIALS 3 - The Grey Cup returned to its all-Eastern roots in 1933 after the Canadian Rugby Union decided to change its playoff format. The winner from Western Canada had been given a bye to the championship since 1921. This year it was decided that the winner from the West would face the Toronto Argonauts in a semi-final, while the Sarnia Imperials were given an automatic invite to the final. The Winnipegs ended the Regina Roughriders’ reign out West, and faced Toronto in the semi. Although the Pegs gave the Argos a scare, Toronto prevailed 13-0 to advance to the final. Despite the advent of the forward pass, 1933 was the first time no touchdowns were scored in a Grey Cup. Toronto outlasted Sarnia in a defensive struggle, and although most people felt the Imperials proved themselves to be a better team, it was the Argonauts who were awarded the trophy. The only Grey Cup ever staged in Sarnia was played on a frozen, snow-covered field. The Imperials dominated the first half, leading 1-0 at halftime. Sarnia added another point in the third quarter. But the complexion of the game soon changed, as Tuffy Griffiths blocked Bummer Stirling’s kick on the Sarnia 40-yard line, giving the Argos the ball. Jack Taylor took a lateral pass from Andy Mullen and ran 20 yards around the end. Teddy Morris then gained seven yards. With the ball straight in front of the goal posts, Tommy Burns lifted the ball between the uprights for a Toronto field goal. Sarnia tied the score in the fourth quarter on a rouge, but Toronto answered back with a single of their own, which was helped set up by a Sarnia fumble. It turned out to be the winning point as the Argos held on to the win, but not before the Imperials threatened in the final minute. Rocky Parsaca threw a pass to Norman Perry, who ran across the field and down the sideline. Toronto’s Ab Box dove at Perry at the Toronto 45-yard line, but he kept going until he was finally stopped five yards from the goal line. But the ball was brought back to the Toronto 45 as referee Jo-Jo Stirrett ruled that Perry stepped out of bounds. Box saved the Argonauts throughout the game. His long punts regained lost yards for Toronto, and on many occasions he proved to be the last line of defence, making huge tackles to prevent potential scoring plays for the Imperials.

1934 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday November 24 at Toronto - ATT: 8,900)

SARNIA IMPERIALS 20, REGINA ROUGHRIDERS 12 - Most experts believed the Sarnia Imperials should have won the Grey Cup in 1933. They made certain the opportunity didn’t slip past them again in 1934. The Imperials, who won nine-straight league titles from 1931 to 1939, won its first Grey Cup title against the Regina Roughriders, who were playing in their seventh final in 12 years. The game was played at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium in ideal football conditions. About 1,000 supporters from Sarnia and other areas in Southwestern Ontario arrived for the game on special trains. Most of the Toronto fans were neutral, but supported the underdog Roughriders as the game progressed. Sarnia had a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on a field goal by Alex Hayes and a pair of rouges off the foot of Bummer Stirling. The Imperials took advantage of a Regina turnover in the second quarter when Terry Olsen mishandled a snap. Sarnia would later score on an extension play as Norman Perry made a lateral pass to Gordie Patterson. The Roughriders answered this touchdown with one of their own before the end of the half. Hugh Stirling fumbled on an attempted kick, and Regina recovered the ball on the Sarnia six-yard line. Olsen carried the ball four yards, and then plunged over the line on second down for the major. Sarnia led 11-5 at intermission. Sarnia scored

Sarnia Imperials Win the Grey Cup, Twice - By Dan McCaffery for the Sarnia Observer (2003)

Half a century after they hung up their cleats for good, the Sarnia Imperials remain the most famous sports team in the city’s history. And with good reason. They were the little team that could. The squad, which operated out of a city with a population of just 18,000 people, battled its way to the Grey Cup game three times in four years during the mid-1930s, winning twice. There are oldtimers who insist the 1934 Imps were the best Canadian football squad ever assembled. Indeed, the Sarnians established a record that year which will probably never be equaled. They posted a perfect 10-0 won-lost record, winning every exhibition, regular schedule and playoff game they played. More impressive still, they were never behind on the scoreboard at any time during the entire season. During seven of the 10 contests, in fact, the Imperials didn’t even allow the opposition to score a touchdown. Overall, the club surrendered only five majors all year. So how did they do it? A key to their success was the fact that Imperial Oil Ltd. was their sponsor. The company lured some of the finest players in the United States to Sarnia by offering them jobs in the local refinery. It’s hard to imagine today, but during the Depression a job at Imperial Oil was worth more than a contract with the fledgling National Football League. Because of that, a player like Orm Beach was willing to turn down the New York Giants in order to suit up with the Imps. Another key to their success was the play of Sarnia native Norm Perry, a future Canadian Football Hall of Famer. When the Imperials won their first Cup in 1934 by defeating the Regina Roughriders, The Observer gave the story lavish coverage. Former Imps lineman Red Wilson, who was the newspaper’s football writer, provided a colourful story. “Paced by the skyscraping hoists of Bummer Stirling, the open field tackling of Orm Beach, the reckless running of Norm Perry and smart generalship of Alex Hayes, the Sarnia twelve was full value for the win,” he told readers. Sarnia had lost the 1935 final to the Toronto Argonauts in a game played at what is now called Norm Perry Park, but the squad drank from the Grey Cup again in 1936 by vanquishing the Ottawa Rough Riders. The Imps continued to thrill Sarnians for years to come, making it to the Eastern Final as recently as 1952. After that, the CFL decided not to let small towns compete, because it feared more Grey Cup wins by Sarnia would tarnish the ‘big league’ image it was striving for. The club’s manager, Maury Chilton, was bitter about the snub for the rest of his life. By the late 1950s, the Imperials had a team “that would have beaten the ears off anything in the CFL if they had let us compete,” he said.

on another turnover in the third quarter. Stirling lifted a kick towards the Regina goal line, which Andy Young caught deep in his zone. As he was tackled, the ball was jarred loose with Johnny Manore pouncing on it for a Sarnia touchdown. Many felt a no-yards penalty should have been issued, but the play stood, giving the Imperials a 17-5 lead at the end of three quarters. Once again in the fourth quarter, Stirling fumbled on a snap, giving Regina possession of the ball. The Roughriders scored their second touchdown when Olsen passed to Steve Adkins for a major. From that point on, Sarnia’s defence shut Regina down. Stirling and Hayes added three singles as Sarnia capped off a perfect season with a Grey Cup championship. It was the last time the Regina Roughriders made it to the Grey Cup until 1951. In its first seven trips, Regina was outscored by the opposition 176-27.

NOTES: 1935 was the last year that university teams challenged for the Grey Cup. Since 1909 when the Grey Cup was first awarded, university teams had been considered on a par with the other senior leagues or unions.  The University of Toronto won the first three Grey Cups and four in total while Queen's university matched the threepeat with their own three Grey Cups.  The first was that 1935 marked the first year that a Western team won the Grey Cup.  The Winnipeg F.C. would not officially take on the nick name Blue Bombers until 1937, but this was definitely a Blue Bomber Grey Cup victory. The way in which the Winnipeg club won the Grey Cup was probably just as important as the fact they won it and would have a huge impact on football in Canada.  The Blue Bombers had gotten tired of losing to the Regina Roughriders pretty much every year in the late 1920s and early 1930s and decided to do something about it.  What that something was, was to recruit more American players with the goal of first beating the Roughriders and then ending the East domination of the Grey Cup.  The Bombers were led by players like the great Fritz Hanson and shock the Eastern football establishment when they defeated the mighty Hamilton Tigers 18-12 in the Grey Cup.  This would lead to the Canadian Rugby Union (CRU) instituting rules to govern how many imports and which ones were eligible to play.  Those rules would generate major conflict the following year in 1936, and result in the Regina team not being allowed to challenge for the Grey Cup despite winning the West.  It would also mark the whole import / non-import ratio game that still exists to this day with only the numbers changing.

1935 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday December 7 at Hamilton - ATT: 6,405)

WINNIPEG 'PEGS 18, HAMILTON TIGERS 12 - Winnipeg scored on the first play from scrimmage in the game. Hamilton kick returner Jack Craig failed to catch the Winnipeg kickoff and Winnipeg recovered. On the next play Bob Fritz completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Bud Marquardt but the convert failed. Hamilton was able to respond with a field goal. In the second quarter Winnipeg's Russ Rebholz completed a touchdown pass to Greg Kabat and this time the convert was good. Each team scored a single to make the halftime score 12-4. In the third quarter Hamilton's Eddie Wright recovered a blocked kick and returned it to the Winnipeg 15 yard line. Wilf Patterson capped a four play drive to run in for the touchdown. The convert and a Frank Turville single brought Hamilton to within two points. With the score 12-10, ace Winnipeg punt

returner Fritz Hanson who had 334 yards in punt returns on the day received a punt near his 30-yard line and returned it 78 yards for the touchdown. Hamilton however forced Winnipeg to give up a safety leaving them a converted touchdown behind. The Tigers marched to the Winnipeg four. A running play went nowhere, so Hamilton tried an onside kick into the end zone. This failed but the Tigers retained possession and on the last play of the game again attempted the onside kick. This time Hanson recovered and ran the ball out of the end zone denying Hamilton even the rouge. This was the first Grey Cup game to feature a number of imported players. The Winnipegs had seven imports in the lineup including future Canadian Football Hall of Famers Hanson, Kabat and Rebholz.
