CANADIAN FOOTBALL - 1933
The Toronto Argonauts lost their first two games of the season, only to storm back and win eight straight, including their first Grey Cup win in 12 years....The Winnipeg St.John's were a no show at the annual meeting of the Manitoba Rugby Football Union. It was later learned that the St.John's had suspended operations for one season while they got their finances in order....The MRFU made attempts to get another organization to take over the operations of the St.John's for the 1933 season. Although there was interest in taking over the team on a permanent basis, there was no interest in being custodian of the team for just one season....In August, the players of the St.John's were dispersed between the Winnipegs and the Garrison. The Garrison was an Army team and only servicemen were eligible to play on the team. The Garrison claimed the only player who qualified (Alf Woods) and the remainder of the players ended up in the camp of the Winnipegs....With an abundance of players available the Winnipegs operated two teams in 1933. The best players ended up on the Winnipegs who were wearing brand new blue jerseys (they weren't blue & gold until 1934). The remaining players wore the old green jerseys and they played under the name Shamrocks...The Winnipeg St.John's failed to re-form in 1934....The British Columbia Rugby Football Union did not have regular season play, but did play 8 games in 3 multi-game series to determine a western semi finalist, and later another final for the league championship.

1933 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday December 9 at Sarnia - ATT: 2,751)
TORONTO ARGONAUTS 4, SARNIA IMPERIALS 3 - The Grey Cup returned to its all-Eastern roots in 1933 after the Canadian Rugby Union decided to change its playoff format. The winner from Western Canada had been given a bye to the championship since 1921. This year it was decided that the winner from the West would face the Toronto Argonauts in a semi-final, while the Sarnia Imperials were given an automatic invite to the final. The Winnipegs ended the Regina Roughriders’ reign out West, and faced Toronto in the semi. Although the Pegs gave the Argos a scare, Toronto prevailed 13-0 to advance to the final. Despite the advent of the forward pass, 1933 was the first time no touchdowns were scored in a Grey Cup. Toronto outlasted Sarnia in a defensive struggle, and although most people felt the Imperials proved themselves to be a better team, it was the Argonauts who were awarded the trophy. The only Grey Cup ever staged in Sarnia was played on a frozen, snow-covered field. The Imperials dominated the first half, leading 1-0 at halftime. Sarnia added another point in the third quarter. But the complexion of the game soon changed, as Tuffy Griffiths blocked Bummer Stirling’s kick on the Sarnia 40-yard line, giving the Argos the ball. Jack Taylor took a lateral pass from Andy Mullen and ran 20 yards around the end. Teddy Morris then gained seven yards. With the ball straight in front of the goal posts, Tommy Burns lifted the ball between the uprights for a Toronto field goal. Sarnia tied the score in the fourth quarter on a rouge, but Toronto answered back with a single of their own, which was helped set up by a Sarnia fumble. It turned out to be the winning point as the Argos held on to the win, but not before the Imperials threatened in the final minute. Rocky Parsaca threw a pass to Norman Perry, who ran across the field and down the sideline. Toronto’s Ab Box dove at Perry at the Toronto 45-yard line, but he kept going until he was finally stopped five yards from the goal line. But the ball was brought back to the Toronto 45 as referee Jo-Jo Stirrett ruled that Perry stepped out of bounds. Box saved the Argonauts throughout the game. His long punts regained lost yards for Toronto, and on many occasions he proved to be the last line of defence, making huge tackles to prevent potential scoring plays for the Imperials.

Sarnia Imperials Win the Grey Cup, Twice - By Dan McCaffery for the Sarnia Observer (2003)
Half a century after they hung up their cleats for good, the Sarnia Imperials remain the most famous sports team in the city’s history. And with good reason. They were the little team that could. The squad, which operated out of a city with a population of just 18,000 people, battled its way to the Grey Cup game three times in four years during the mid-1930s, winning twice. There are oldtimers who insist the 1934 Imps were the best Canadian football squad ever assembled. Indeed, the Sarnians established a record that year which will probably never be equaled. They posted a perfect 10-0 won-lost record, winning every exhibition, regular schedule and playoff game they played. More impressive still, they were never behind on the scoreboard at any time during the entire season. During seven of the 10 contests, in fact, the Imperials didn’t even allow the opposition to score a touchdown. Overall, the club surrendered only five majors all year. So how did they do it? A key to their success was the fact that Imperial Oil Ltd. was their sponsor. The company lured some of the finest players in the United States to Sarnia by offering them jobs in the local refinery. It’s hard to imagine today, but during the Depression a job at Imperial Oil was worth more than a contract with the fledgling National Football League. Because of that, a player like Orm Beach was willing to turn down the New York Giants in order to suit up with the Imps. Another key to their success was the play of Sarnia native Norm Perry, a future Canadian Football Hall of Famer. When the Imperials won their first Cup in 1934 by defeating the Regina Roughriders, The Observer gave the story lavish coverage. Former Imps lineman Red Wilson, who was the newspaper’s football writer, provided a colourful story. “Paced by the skyscraping hoists of Bummer Stirling, the open field tackling of Orm Beach, the reckless running of Norm Perry and smart generalship of Alex Hayes, the Sarnia twelve was full value for the win,” he told readers. Sarnia had lost the 1935 final to the Toronto Argonauts in a game played at what is now called Norm Perry Park, but the squad drank from the Grey Cup again in 1936 by vanquishing the Ottawa Rough Riders. The Imps continued to thrill Sarnians for years to come, making it to the Eastern Final as recently as 1952. After that, the CFL decided not to let small towns compete, because it feared more Grey Cup wins by Sarnia would tarnish the ‘big league’ image it was striving for. The club’s manager, Maury Chilton, was bitter about the snub for the rest of his life. By the late 1950s, the Imperials had a team “that would have beaten the ears off anything in the CFL if they had let us compete,” he said.

1934 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday November 24 at Toronto - ATT: 8,900)
SARNIA IMPERIALS 20, REGINA ROUGHRIDERS 12 - Most experts believed the Sarnia Imperials should have won the Grey Cup in 1933. They made certain the opportunity didn’t slip past them again in 1934. The Imperials, who won nine-straight league titles from 1931 to 1939, won its first Grey Cup title against the Regina Roughriders, who were playing in their seventh final in 12 years. The game was played at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium in ideal football conditions. About 1,000 supporters from Sarnia and other areas in Southwestern Ontario arrived for the game on special trains. Most of the Toronto fans were neutral, but supported the underdog Roughriders as the game progressed. Sarnia had a 5-0 lead at the end of the
first quarter on a field goal by Alex Hayes and a pair of rouges off the foot of Bummer Stirling. The Imperials took advantage of a Regina turnover in the second quarter when Terry Olsen mishandled a snap. Sarnia would later score on an extension play as Norman Perry made a lateral pass to Gordie Patterson. The Roughriders answered this touchdown with one of their own before the end of the half. Hugh Stirling fumbled on an attempted kick, and Regina recovered the ball on the Sarnia six-yard line. Olsen carried the ball four yards, and then plunged over the line on second down for the major. Sarnia led 11-5 at intermission. Sarnia scored on another turnover in the third quarter. Stirling lifted a kick towards the Regina goal line, which Andy Young caught deep in his zone. As he was tackled, the ball was jarred loose with Johnny Manore pouncing on it for a Sarnia touchdown. Many felt a no-yards penalty should have been issued, but the play stood, giving the Imperials a 17-5 lead at the end of three quarters. Once again in the fourth quarter, Stirling fumbled on a snap, giving Regina possession of the ball. The Roughriders scored their second touchdown when Olsen passed to Steve Adkins for a major. From that point on, Sarnia’s defence shut Regina down. Stirling and Hayes added three singles as Sarnia capped off a perfect season with a Grey Cup championship. It was the last time the Regina Roughriders made it to the Grey Cup until 1951. In its first seven trips, Regina was outscored by the opposition 176-27.

NOTES: 1935 was the last year that university teams challenged for the Grey Cup. Since 1909 when the Grey Cup was first awarded, university teams had been considered on a par with the other senior leagues or unions. The University of Toronto won the first three Grey Cups and four in total while Queen's university matched the threepeat with their own three Grey Cups. The first was that 1935 marked the first year that a Western team won the Grey Cup. The Winnipeg F.C. would not officially take on the nick name Blue Bombers until 1937, but this was definitely a Blue Bomber Grey Cup victory. The way in which the Winnipeg club won the Grey Cup was probably just as important as the fact they won it and would have a huge impact on football in Canada. The Blue Bombers had gotten tired of losing to the Regina Roughriders pretty much every year in the late 1920s and early 1930s and decided to do something about it. What that something was, was to recruit more American players with the goal of first beating the Roughriders and then ending the East domination of the Grey Cup. The Bombers were led by players like the great Fritz Hanson and shock the Eastern football establishment when they defeated the mighty Hamilton Tigers 18-12 in the Grey Cup. This would lead to the Canadian Rugby Union (CRU) instituting rules to govern how many imports and which ones were eligible to play. Those rules would generate major conflict the following year in 1936, and result in the Regina team not being allowed to challenge for the Grey Cup despite winning the West. It would also mark the whole import / non-import ratio game that still exists to this day with only the numbers changing.

1935 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday December 7 at Hamilton - ATT: 6,405)
WINNIPEG 'PEGS 18, HAMILTON TIGERS 12 - Winnipeg scored on the first play from scrimmage in the game. Hamilton kick returner Jack Craig failed to catch the Winnipeg kickoff and Winnipeg recovered. On the next play Bob Fritz completed a

15-yard touchdown pass to Bud Marquardt but the convert failed. Hamilton was able to respond with a field goal. In the second quarter Winnipeg's Russ Rebholz completed a touchdown pass to Greg Kabat and this time the convert was good. Each team scored a single to make the halftime score 12-4. In the third quarter Hamilton's Eddie Wright recovered a blocked kick and returned it to the Winnipeg 15 yard line. Wilf Patterson capped a four play drive to run in for the touchdown. The convert and a Frank Turville single brought Hamilton to within two points. With the score 12-10, ace Winnipeg punt returner Fritz Hanson who had 334 yards in punt returns on the day received a punt near his 30-yard line and returned it 78 yards for the touchdown. Hamilton however forced Winnipeg to give up a safety leaving them a converted touchdown behind. The Tigers marched to the Winnipeg four. A running play went nowhere, so Hamilton tried an onside kick into the end zone. This failed but the Tigers retained possession and on the last play of the game again attempted the onside kick. This time Hanson recovered and ran the ball out of the end zone denying Hamilton even the rouge. This was the first Grey Cup game to feature a number of imported players. The Winnipegs had seven imports in the lineup including future Canadian Football Hall of Famers Hanson, Kabat and Rebholz.

The Western Interprovincial Football Union (WIFU) was formed with Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Calgary Bronks and Regina Roughriders. Calgary-Regina games are worth 4 points. IRFU and WIFU adopt playoff format of a two-game total-point series between first and second place teams. A white ball was used for games played under floodlights in Western Canada. Intercollegiate teams stop competing for the Grey Cup

1936 GREY CUP PLAYOFFS
WEST
SAT NOV 7 - Regina over Moose Jaw Millers (Withdrew before game was played in Winnipeg)
WED NOV 11 - Regina Roughriders 8, CALGARY BRONKS "B" SIDE 1 (Final)
NOTE: The CRU (Canadian Rugby Union) decreed that only imports who were resident in Canada by January 1 could play and also that teams were limited to just 5 imports. This seems to have been largely in reaction to the first Grey Cup win by a Western team in 1935 by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who were bolstered by seven American imports. When Regina won the West, five of their imports were declared illegal by the CRU. Regina offered to drop the players for the Grey Cup, but the CRU would not allow them to play for the cup. Instead, the Grey Cup was a contest between the Sarnia Imperials of the ORFU and the Ottawa Rough Riders of the IRFU.
EAST
SAT NOV 21 - Sarnia Imperials 11, TORONTO BALMY BEACH 7 (ORFU Final)
1936 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday December 5 at Toronto - ATT: 5,883)
SARNIA IMPERIALS 26, OTTAWA ROUGH RIDERS 20 - A year following Western Canada’s first Grey Cup win another dispute between the Western Canada Rugby Football Union and the Canadian Football Union resulted in the Grey Cup being awarded to the Eastern champion. The CRU ruled that only U.S. residents of Canada before January 1 were eligible to play in the Grey Cup. Since the Regina Roughriders had five ineligible imports on their roster, they withdrew their challenge. The parties attempted to reconcile but it was to no avail. The Eastern Final turned out to be one of the better games ever contested for the Grey Cup. Sarnia jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Mike Clawson’s recovery of an Ottawa fumble 10 yards from the goal line paved the way for Ormond Beach’s run into the end zone. Sarnia scored again on an Alex Hayes-to-Rocky Parsaca-to-Mike Hedgewick end run which started 45 yards out and ended with Hedgewick flying across the goal line. The Rough Riders finally got on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the contest when Tommy Daley went around the end and fired a lateral pass to Andy Tommy who ran 35 yards to paydirt. Ottawa evened the score in the second quarter as Tiny Herman smothered a Sarnia fumble on the Imperials’ 30. Dave Sprague and Bunny Wadsworth took turns hammering the Imps back towards their goal line. Wadsworth fumbled as he crossed the line, but was awarded a touchdown. Poor kicking by Ottawa’s Rocky Rocanno resulted in the Imps restoring their 12-point advantage. Rocanno kicked it out of touch at his own 25 setting up Beach’s second touchdown of the game. Rocanno kicked it into touch again as the Ottawa 35, giving the Imperials great field position. Hedgewick ran around the right end for 15, Beach plunged for 10, and Hedgewick streaked around the end again for the try. Sarnia had a 24-12 at halftime. Ottawa cut the deficit by two in the third quarter on a pair of rouges. The Rough Riders came out determined in the final 15 minutes. On a drive start from the Ottawa 40, the Riders stormed down field, scoring on Arnie Morrison’s run around the end. With time running out, Ottawa had one last chance to tie the score. On third down and seven yards from the end zone, the ball was snapped back to Jack Leore, who sidestepped a tackle and threw the ball hard and low. Hedgewick came out of no where to bat the ball down and secure the win for the Imps.

1937 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday December 11 at Toronto - ATT: 11,522)
TORONTO ARGONAUTS 4, WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS 3 - The Argo Bounce was born in 1937 as the Toronto Argonauts won the Grey Cup by the narrowest of margins for the second time in five years. A total of 11,522 fans braved the elements at Varsity Stadium as a bitter north-west wind made for less than ideal football conditions. The Blue Bombers opened the scoring with a single point, but came close to scoring a touchdown. Bob Fritz, Winnipeg’s player-coach, picked up Art West’s fumble and streaked down the right sideline with a clear route between him and the Toronto end zone. Toronto’s Bob Isbister made a diving tackle, tripping up Fritz inside the Argonaut 10. Following two failed plunges, Steve Olander dropped back and kicked a rouge. The Boatmen soon took the lead for good when Fritz Hanson dropped a kick from Isbister, allowing Toronto’s Bill Bryers to recover the loose football at the Winnipeg 20. Earl Selkirk, filling in for the hospitalized Annis Stukus, booted a perfect placement from an awkward angle. Winnipeg looked to have taken the lead when Bill Stukus muffed an Olander punt, allowing Bill Ceretti to pick up the fumble and run towards the end zone. The play was called back, however, as a no yards penalty was assessed to the Blue Bombers. The Blue Bombers had other opportunities to take the lead. A forward pass from Fritz to Jeff Nicklin and a lateral from Nicklin to Bud Marquardt allowed Greg Kabat to attempt a field goal from 40 yards out, which he missed. West’s second fumble of the game gave the Blue Bombers another chance at a placement in the second quarter, but Olander kicked low and wide for a single point. Toronto took a 4-2 lead when Isbister booted a 70-yard punt. Winnipeg cut its deficit in half in the third quarter as Herb Peschel gathered a failed lateral by Stukus and was stopped near the Toronto 35. The Blue Bombers attempted another field goal, but Kabat missed again for a single point. That was as close as the Blue Bombers would get to the Argos. The Argo Bounce came to life when Marquardt blocked an attempted punt and he and Toronto’s Teddy Morris raced for the football. The ball bounced right into Morris’ hands. Had Marquardt recovered the pigskin, the Blue Bombers would have had the ball deep in Argonaut territory.

1938 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday December 10 at Toronto - ATT: 18,778)
TORONTO ARGONAUTS 30, WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS 7 - For the second consecutive season the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers met for the Grey Cup. Although the end result was the same, the way the Argos won was quite different than their two previous championships. Winnipeg head coach Reg Threlfall was confident heading into the game against the Argos. “We’ll cut 'em off at the knees and they’ll look like Boy Scouts.” He may have been on the money for the first 45 minutes of play, but he didn’t account for an unknown 20-year old on the Argos bench. Red Storey became a household name in just 15 minutes of action, scoring three touchdowns and setting up another to hand the Argos a dramatic victory. With the Boatmen trailing 7-6 in the final quarter, Storey got the ball on the Winnipeg 28-yard line, swung wide on the right side of the offensive line then cut sharply to his left, maneuvering his way through a number of missed Blue Bomber tackles to the end zone. Storey then shined on defence, intercepting a Winnipeg pass. He shook off a tackle and raced to the Winnipeg four-yard line where he was knocked out of bounds. Three plays later, Storey ran straight down the middle for a one-yard touchdown. Bob Isbister then made an interception and alertly threw a lateral pass to Storey when he was being tackled. Storey charged almost the entire length of the field before being tackled in the shadow of Winnipeg’s goal posts. Bill Stukus threw a pass down the middle to Bernie Thornton to give the Argos another major. Art Evans then intercepted a pass, setting up another Storey touchdown run. His three touchdowns tied a Grey Cup record set by Ross Craig in 1913 and which has been equaled on two later occasions. Winnipeg missed an opportunity for a touchdown in the third quarter when Bill Ceretti blocked an Isbister punt. Bud Marquardt slapped the ball with his hand then dribbled it downfield toward the Toronto end zone. But Ted Morris saved the day for the Argos, smothering the ball on his own nine-yard line. Had Marquardt been able to score, it may have changed the complexion of the game. When the final whistle sounded the fans ran onto the field and carried the newest Grey Cup hero Storey to the showers. A record crowd of 18,778 witnessed the contest. Storey eventually changed his Double Blue uniform for zebra stripes, becoming an official for 12 years in football and nine as an NHL referee.

1939 GREY CUP GAME (Saturday December 9 at Ottawa - ATT: 11,738)
WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS 8, OTTAWA ROUGH RIDERS 7 - Despite the world at war once again, the battle for Canadian football supremacy continued. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers played in their third consecutive Grey Cup final, but this time made sure they were rewarded for their efforts. A last-second rouge gave Winnipeg its second title in five years in only the second Grey Cup game played in the nation’s capital. A costly error by Ottawa’s Orville Burke put the Blue Bombers in great field position, allowing Art Stevenson to kick the winning point. The Rough Riders drew first blood in the first quarter when Burke fired a 40-yard pass to Rick Perley, who then threw a lateral pass to Andy Tommy who took it the rest of the way for a major. Later in the quarter Burke made his first fumble of the game, and Winnipeg’s Lou Mogul fell on the ball on the Ottawa 10-yard line. Andy Bieber needed two cracks at the goal line to cut the Blue Bombers’ deficit to 6-5. On the opening play of the second quarter Greg Kabat missed on a 42-yard field goal attempt, tying the score with a rouge. This was all the scoring until the fourth quarter. Bill Ceretti blocked a punt on third down, which Les Lear recovered at the Ottawa 15. Kabat attempted another placement, but missed again for another rouge. Ottawa had a chance to take the lead with three minutes to go, but Tiny Herman missed on an attempted field goal. His kick sailed right of the goal posts, but managed to tie the score at 7-7. With overtime a real possibility, Stevenson kicked the ball to Burke. The ball eluded him and was recovered by Winnipeg’s Jeff Nicklin deep in Ottawa territory. Stevenson then attempted a single point, but Burke kicked the ball out of touch near the Ottawa 10-yard line. Stevenson made good on his second attempt, kicking the ball to the deadline for the winning point. The Rough Riders had three more plays to move down field, but could not snatch victory from the hands of defeat. Winnipeg won the title despite playing at a disadvantage. Western rules allowed linemen to block 10 yards past the line of scrimmage, while the East played under a three-yard rule. The Blue Bombers were forced to play under the Eastern standard. The game was played on a snow-covered field at temperatures hovering around minus-5 degrees Celsius. The day before the game, groundskeepers attempted to improve the state of the frozen field by lighting hundreds of litres of gasoline, but the field froze again overnight.

Edmonton Journal - December 4th 1939

NOTES: 1940 saw another East-West squabble with the East controlled CRU declaring the West champions ineligible to play in the Grey Cup due to rule difference between the East and West. With no West representation, the Grey Cup was played between the IRFU champion Ottawa Rough Riders and the ORFU champion Toronto Balmy Beaches. The CRU actually declared Ottawa the Gray Cup champions ten days after the second game was played between the two teams. The Rough Riders and Beaches had played a two game total point series, making it the first and only time that format was used in the Grey Cup. Montreal had no team nickname in 1940. Edmonton withdraws from the WIFU (May 13).
