1972 IN REVIEW
Green Bay parlayed a strong running attack and a stifling defense into its first playoff berth in five years, and its last until 1982. From opening day to the regular season finale in New Orleans, the Packers never relinquished first place in the NFC. Getting there was not easy. Change was the theme as the season started. 21 players from the 1971 squad were absent to start the season. With Dan Devine's major overhaul apparent throughout the starting lineup, the Packers set out to overcome the previous four years of non-playoff activity. The team's schedule was the fourth toughest in the league based on their opponents' winning percentage (.579) from 1971. Green Bay also butted heads with five teams that made the 1971 playoffs - six if the Vikings are counted twice. The Packers won four of those six encounters, including close wins over the NFC Champion runner-up 49ers and the defending champion Cowboys.
JERRY TAGGE - A HOMETOWN HOPE
It had all the makings of a Hollywood movie. A young boy sells concessions at the stadium he would later star as a quarterback. That seemed to be the theme in place for Jerry Tagge, the Packers' second first round draft choice in 1972. Born at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Tagge attended Green Bay West before starring at Nebraska, where, as a junior, he took over the starting position from Van Brownson, leading the team to two Orange Bowl wins and Tagge won MVP honors in both games. Tagge spent most of his rookie season on the bench, before going 3-3 as a starter in both 1973 and 1974, but he completed only three touchdown passes in the 17 games he played, with 17 interceptions. Tagge left for the San Antonio Wings (WFL). In the team's final game before the league folded in October 1975, he was intercepted five times. In 1977, Tagge joined the British Columbia Lions (CFL), and led them to a 10-2 record, winning four games in the last minute of play, before they lost their last four games. In the playoffs, the Lions defeated Winnipeg 33-22 for their first post-season victory since the 1964 Grey Cup. B.C. moved on to the Western Final but were crushed by the eventual champions, the Edmonton Eskimos, 40-1. Tagge was named the Western Division Most Outstanding Player, the first Lion to capture the trophy since Tom Brown in 1964. The Lions struggled in 1978 as Tagge was unable to re-create the magic of his first season. The club finished at 7-7-2 and missed the playoffs. Tagge returned to B.C. in 1979 and led the Lions to a 10-1 record but a knee injury ended his career. In 1981, Tagge moved to St. Louis, where he sold apartment buildings. He returned to Nebraska in 1986, initially selling life insurance, then founded Tagge-Rutherford Financial Services in Omaha, for which he serves as executive vice president. Years later, Tagge is finally at peace - Alcohol problems derailed his career (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel article)

The Year the Packers Came Back: Green Bay's 1972 Resurgence (2019) - The 1972 Green Bay Packers were not expected to challenge for a playoff spot, or even to top their four victories from the season before. But the players were an eclectic group of over-achievers, 20 of whom were brand new to the team. Despite disheartening decisions by a questionable head coach, they gelled almost immediately and by season's end became the only Packers team throughout the 1970s to earn a division title. This book details how they succeeded beyond all expectations and tells one of the great stories in pro football history. To purchase the book, click here (Amazon)

Coming at the end of his playing career, A Perspective on Victory provides a look at the legendary Packers QB and some of his key games in Green Bay. Filled with great classic photos from the era by Vernon Biever, this is an invaluable addition to any Bart Starr or Packer fan’s collection. (Credit: Packerville, U.S.A)

MIAMI DOLPHINS (16-0) 14, WASHINGTON REDSKINS (13-3) 7 - The Dolphins played virtually perfect football in the first half as their defense permitted the Redskins to cross midfield only once and their offense turned good field position into two touchdowns. On its third possession, Miami opened its first scoring drive from the Dolphins' 37 yard line. An 18-yard pass from Bob Griese to Paul Warfield preceded by three plays Griese's 28-yard touchdown pass to Howard Twilley. After Washington moved from its 17 to the Miami 48 with two minutes remaining in the first half, Dolphins linebacker Nick Buoniconti intercepted Billy Kilmer's pass at the Miami 41 and returned it to the Washington 27. Jim Kiick ran for three yards, Larry Csonka for three, Griese passed to Jim Mandich for 19, and Kiick gained one to the 1-yard line. With 18 seconds left until intermission, Kiick scored from the one. Washington's only touchdown came with 2:07 left in the game and resulted from a misplayed field-goal attempt and fumble by Garo Yepremian, with the Redskins' Mike Bass picking the ball out of the air and running 49 yards for the score. Dolphins safety Jake Scott, who had two interceptions, including one in the end zone to kill a Redskins' drive, was voted the game's most valuable player.

GREY CUP (Sunday December 3rd at Hamilton - 33,993)
HAMILTON TIGER-CATS 13, SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS 10 - Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium played host to the Grey Cup for the first time since 1944 and fitting enough, the hometown Tiger-Cats advanced to the big game. Their opponents were the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who got past Edmonton and Winnipeg in close-scoring playoff games. The Ticats jumped out on top 10-0 in the opening quarter. Hamilton’s Al Brenner intercepted a pass from Saskatchewan quarterback Ron Lancaster, setting up Chuck Ealey’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Dave Fleming. Later in the quarter, Hamilton’s Bob Krouse blocked a Bob Pearce punt to help set up a 27-yard field goal by Ian Sunter. Krouse would partially block another punt later in the game. The home side thought they went up 17-0 when Brenner picked off another Lancaster pass and returned the ball 27 yards for an apparent touchdown, only to have the play called back on an offside call against George Wells. Saskatchewan tied the score by halftime. Lancaster connected with slotback Tom Campana on an eight-yard touchdown pass, while Jack Abendschan was successful on a 20-yard field goal attempt to make it 10-10. Saskatchewan’s George Reed gained 64 of his 93 total rushing yards in the quarter. With 1:51 remaining in regulation, the Ticats put together a winning drive. Tony Gabriel came up with three big catches, his only three of the game. On the first play Ealey hit Gabriel over the middle for a 27-yard gain. Ealey went back to Gabriel for additional 12 yards, then one play later, the connection worked again for another 15 yards to set the Ticats on the Saskatchewan 41 with 51 seconds remaining. The game ultimately came down to the final play. Sunter, a 19-year-old rookie place kicker who had only been on the field on two other occasions, split the uprights from 34 yards away to win the game for the Ticats. Ealey completed 18 of 29 pass attempts for 291 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted twice. Lancaster was 20 of 29 passing for 239 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Hamilton’s Garney Henley, the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player, led all players with 98 receiving yards. Angelo Mosca went out a winner in his final CFL game. The two-time CFL All-Star was elected into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1987. It was the final time the Grey Cup was held in December.
