1971 IN REVIEW
Dan Devine's first game as head coach of the Green Bay Packers had him feeling literally run down. Besides losing to the New York Giants 42-40, the long-time college coach broke his leg midway through the fourth quarter in a sideline pileup following an interception by Doug Hart. Devine was taken to Saint Vincent Hospital where he listened to the remainder of the game on the radio. Devine, who had posted winning records at both Arizona State and the University of Missouri, struggled in his first year in the professional ranks. Inconsistency, turnovers and the lack of a passing game led to a 4-8-2 record, the worst for Green Bay in 13 years. The season would also see Bart Starr give way to Scott Hunter as the Packers' starting quarterback. The season's bright spot was the running of John Brockington, who captured the Offensive Rookie of the year with 1,105 yards rushing.
SECOND ROUND BUSTS
Prior to 2009, when the Packers cut QB Brian Brohm, one year after using a second-round choice on him, you would have to go back almost 40 years to find the last time the Packers released a 2nd-rounder this early in his career based on performance only. In 1971, Dan Devine drafted RB Virgil Robinson of Grambling in the second round. He wanted him so bad, despite picking RB John Brockington in the first round, that he sent Travis Williams to the Rams for the draft pick. Robinson was tried as a running back, a wide receiver, and a defensive back, before the team released him the week before the regular season. Robinson would go on play 14 games with the Saints (101 yards rushing). The Saints released Robinson in October 1972, but he found one final opportunity to chase down his dream when the World Football League formed in 1974. Robinson played for the Houston Texans and moved with the team to Shreveport, where they became the Steamers. The league struggled to remain afloat and partway through the 1975 season, the Steamers organization asked players to take a substantial pay cut. With a wife and a new baby, Robinson made a difficult decision to end his football dream and pursue a career in banking, after rushing for 550 yards over two season in the WFL. More recently, the Packers parted with second-round draft picks after only one season four times, but they either traded the player or cut him because of a career-ending injury. In 2005, they drafted WR Terrence Murphy and released him the following April because of the neck injury that ended his career. In 1999, they drafted CB Fred Vinson then traded him in 2000 as part of the deal for running back Ahman Green. In 1992, they drafted LB Mark D’Onofrio, then cut him in 1993 because of a torn hamstring that ended his career. In 1975, they drafted OL Bill Bain, then traded him in 1976 for a third-round draft pick.

LOMBARDI (1971) - One of the best books about Packers coach Vince Lombardi was called simply Lombardi. First published in 1971, it is made up mostly of quotes about the man from those who knew him best. “His shadow was long, his legacy large, and his place in the pantheon immovable. Green Bay Packer coach Vince "Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing" Lombardi was such a legend in his life that even he had a hard time keeping himself in focus: "I don't know," he once said hauntingly, "what I am." This fascinating oral history, originally published in 1971, the year after Lombardi's death, helps unravel the conundrum. It brings a complex combination of benevolent father figure and tyrannical martinet back into view. What the hundreds of reminiscences from Lombardi lovers and haters both in and out of football don't completely capture--and that's not much--Vernon Biever's stark black-and-white photography fills in. The late poet James Dickey's surreal epilogue in the form of a free-verse eulogy is a curiosity for today's more politically correct world; it is daringly unafraid to charge through the neutral zone and tackle Lombardi's dark side.” — Amazon.com (CREDIT: Packerville, USA for more pictures and content)

DALLAS COWBOYS (13-3) 24, MIAMI DOLPHINS (12-3-1) 3 - The Cowboys rushed for a record 252 yards and their defense limited the Dolphins to a low of 185 yards while not permitting a touchdown for the first time in Super Bowl history. Dallas converted Chuck Howley's recovery of Larry Csonka's first fumble of the season into a 3-0 advantage and led at halftime 10-3. After Dallas received the second-half kickoff, Duane Thomas led a 71-yard march in eight plays for a 17-3 margin. Howley intercepted Bob Griese's pass at the 50 and returned it to the Miami 9 early in the fourth period, and three plays later Roger Staubach passed 7 yards to Mike Ditka for the final touchdown. Thomas rushed for 95 yards and Walt Garrison gained 74. Staubach, voted the game's most valuable player, completed 12 of 19 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

The Grey Cup Championship was played on artificial turf for the first time in Vancouver. The BC Lions also wore special "CCC"-logo helmets to commemorate the Canadian Confederation Centennial of British Columbia, the province having entered into Canadian Confederation a hundred years earlier, in 1871. The flower in the centre of the "CCC" logo is the pacific dogwood, the official provincial flower of British Columbia. All CFL teams had their player's last names appearing on the jersey backs (at shoulder height, above the back number) beginning this season. This would be the last year until 2006 that the Edmonton Eskimos would miss the playoffs; in the intervening years, they would reach the playoffs for 33 straight years.

GREY CUP (Sunday November 28th at Vancouver - 34,404)
CALGARY STAMPEDERS 14, TORONTO ARGONAUTS 11 - Two teams looking to end Grey Cup droughts met at a soggy Empire Stadium in Vancouver to determine the 1971 champion. The Calgary Stampeders had not sipped from the coveted trophy since their perfect season in 1948. The Stampeders were making their second straight appearance at the game, and their third in four years. On the other side of the field were the Toronto Argonauts who had not won the Grey Cup since 1952, the last time they played in the championship game. It was a defensive struggle right from the outset. Stampeders began the scoring in the first quarter when Jerry Keeling threw a 14-yard pass to Herman Harrison. Toronto had a chance to tie it up when Mel Profit caught a pass for a 55-yard gain, setting up the Argonauts on the Calgary 11. The Stampeders defence forced the Argonauts to settle for an Ivan MacMillan field goal. Calgary took a 14-3 lead into halftime when Jesse Mims scored on a six-yard draw. Rudy Linterman played a big role in setting up both of Calgary’s touchdowns, a combined 68 yards on two catches. Linterman was kicked out of the game in the fourth quarter for punching Gene Mack. The Argonauts scored their only touchdown on special teams in the third quarter. Calgary’s Jim Silye fumbled on a punt return, and Toronto’s Joe Vijuk recovered the ball. He threw a lateral pass to Roger Scales and he ran 33 yards to the Calgary end zone. Dick Thornton made an outstanding catch later in the quarter, which was followed by Jim Henderson’s catch on the Calgary 27. MacMillan sailed his field goal attempt wide (although he argued it did split the uprights), giving the Argonauts just a single point. That proved to be all the scoring, but not all the drama. In the late stages of the fourth quarter, Dick Thornton intercepted a pass by Keeling and returned the ball 54 yards to the Calgary 11. But running back Leon McQuay slipped and fell on the wet turf, losing the football which the Stampeders recovered with 1:53 remaining. The Stampeders went two-and-out on their next possession, giving the Argonauts one last chance to pull out a win. But Toronto’s Harry Abofs kicked the punted ball out of bounds, an error in judgement as it returned possession to Calgary. The Stampeders ran out the clock for the win.
