1976 IN REVIEW
The Packers of 1976 were a prime example of why Bart Starr had asked the fans for patience at his first press conference as head coach. Except for a four-game stretch in October, the team was nearly as ineffective as its counterparts from the year before. The team made a one-game improvement in its record (5-9), yet finished at the bottom of the NFC Central Division for a second year in a row. Offensively, the team dropped from 23rd to 26th, coming in ahead of only the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons. Defensively, the team improved two notches to 14th overall, but allowed opponents to score more points in 1975. When the Packers generated more rushing yards than their opponents, they usually won. In all but one instance, the team with the most rushing yards emerged victorious. The lone exception, the Vikings, who slipped past the Packers 17-10 on November 21 despite being outrushed 146-100 yards.
THE 1976 SWINE FLU "EPIDEMIC"
During the last swine flu outbreak, in 1976, the government tried to convince every American to get vaccinated. And in Wisconsin, that effort included showing this public service announcement featuring Johnnie Gray and Steve Luke of the Packers. The swine flu outbreak, also known as the swine flu fiasco, or the swine flu debacle, was a strain of H1N1 influenza virus that appeared in 1976. Infections were only detected from January 19 to February 9, and were not found outside Fort Dix. The outbreak is most remembered for the mass immunization that it prompted in the United States. The strain itself killed one person and hospitalized 13. However, side-effects from the vaccine caused five hundred cases of Guillain–Barré syndrome and 25 deaths. The relatively benign disease outbreak and the vaccine reactions produced some political and sociological fallout. The vaccination program has been attributed to the political climate associated with President Ford's re-election campaign in 1976.

THE VINCE LOMBARDI SCRAPBOOK (1976): "Following the life of Green Bay’s legendary head coach, The Vince Lombardi Scrapbook is one that we’d recommend for students of this era in Packers history. With classic photography by Vernon Biever, and also period photos from throughout his life (as well as newspaper clippings — hence the “scrapbook” concept), there is much to learn here. A fine volume." - Packerville, USA for more pictures and content

SUPER BOWL 11 (January 9 at Pasadena)
OAKLAND RAIDERS (15-1) 32, MINNESOTA VIKINGS (13-2-1) 14 - The Raiders won their first NFL championship before a record Super Bowl crowd plus 81 million television viewers, the largest audience ever to watch a sporting event. The Raiders gained a record-breaking 429 yards, including running back Clarence Davis's 137 rushing yards. Wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff made four key receptions, which earned him the game's most valuable player trophy. Oakland scored on three successive possessions in the second quarter to build a 16-0 halftime lead. Errol Mann's 24-yard field goal opened the scoring, then the AFC champions put together drives of 64 and 35 yards, scoring on a 1-yard pass from Ken Stabler to Dave Casper and a 1-yard run by Pete Banaszak. The Raiders increased their lead to 19-0 on a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter, but Minnesota responded with a 12-play, 58-yard drive late in the period, with Fran Tarkenton passing eight yards to wide receiver Sammy White to cut the deficit to 19-7. Two fourth-quarter interceptions clinched the title for the Raiders. One set up Banaszak's second touchdown run, the other resulted in cornerback Willie Brown's Super Bowl-record 75-yard interception return.

GREY CUP (Sunday November 28th at Toronto - 53,467)
OTTAWA ROUGHRIDERS 23, SASKATCHEWAN ROUGH RIDERS 20 - The Ottawa Rough Riders and Saskatchewan Roughriders engaged in an epic battle for Earl Grey’s hallowed mug in 1976. The outcome was in doubt until the final stages when Tony Gabriel made one of the more memorable catches in Grey Cup history, giving Ottawa an upset victory. Leading 3-0 in the first quarter, the East Riders scored their first major of the game on a special teams play. Rookie Bill Hatanaka received a Saskatchewan punt and 79 yards later reached the end zone, the first punt return for a touchdown in Grey Cup history. Ottawa had a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes. Saskatchewan’s offence got going in the second quarter. But running back Molly McGee suffered a rib injury before the end of the half, and the Green Riders were never the same after this. It proved to be the most successful quarter for the Saskatchewan offence. Ron Lancaster threw a pair of touchdown passes to Steve Mazurak and Rob Richardson within the space of two minutes. Ted Provost intercepted a Tom

Bill Hatanaka of the Rough Riders heads downfield to score Ottawa’s first touchdown at the 1976 Grey Cup in Toronto. As Hatanaka describes it, ‘punt return left, the ball bounced once and once I moved by the first tackler, it was truly as if the seas had parted.’ (John Maiola/The Globe and Mail)

Head coach George Brancato and members of the Ottawa Rough Riders celebrate their 23-20 victory over the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the 1976 Grey Cup game.
Clements pass to set up Richardson’s touchdown. Saskatchewan took a 17-10 lead into halftime. Ottawa kicker Gerry Organ put his club in great field position in the third quarter when he faked a punt and ran 52 yards to the Saskatchewan 21. It went for naught, however, as on the next play Saskatchewan’s Cleveland Vann intercepted Clements. Both clubs exchanged field goals in the quarter. Ottawa was in better field position with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. On a third-down gamble on the Saskatchewan goal line, Clements was stopped on a draw play as Ottawa turned over the ball on downs. But the defence of the East Riders held, giving the Ottawa offence one last opportunity. With 20 seconds remaining and trailing 20-16, Clements decided to change the play sent to him from the sidelines. Gabriel faked a post pattern, then went to the corner, catching Clements 24-yard pass for the winning touchdown, Ottawa’s only offensive TD in the game. Ironically, it was Gabriel who sunk Saskatchewan’s Grey Cup fortunes in 1972 with three key catches late in that game. All the points were scored by Canadian players. Saskatchewan’s Bob Macoritti booted two field goals and a pair of converts, while Organ was good on three field goals and two converts.Outstanding Offensive Player: Tom Clements, QB, Ottawa; Outstanding Defensive Player: Cleveland Vann, LB, Saskatchewan; Outstanding Canadian: Tony Gabriel, TE, Ottawa
TRIVIA
-
All the points in this game were scored by Canadians.
-
This was the last Grey Cup championship for the Ottawa Rough Riders (the team folded in 1996) and the last playoff game for the Saskatchewan Roughriders until 1988. The 1976 victory was the last major sports championship of any kind for Ottawa until the Ottawa Redblacks (the third CFL franchise to play in the city) won the 104th Grey Cup in 2016. In total, Ottawa's championship drought would last for 27 seasons of CFL play and 40 years altogether.
-
This was the last "Rough Riders vs. Roughriders" Grey Cup match-up.
-
The game-winning ball caught by Tony Gabriel ended up in the possession of Bruce Crete, who was 12 at the time. He and the other neighborhood children played football with it until it wore out six years later.
-
The 1976 game was only Grey Cup game between 1973 and 1982 that the Edmonton Eskimos did not appear in, having been defeated by Saskatchewan in the Western Conference Final game.
-
Beginning this year, and up until 1982, the Grey Cup game would be held in alternating years in either Toronto (CNE Stadium) or Montreal (Olympic Stadium). This practice would finally end following the completion of BC Place in Vancouver in 1983.
