1977 IN REVIEW

The Packers' offense in 1977 was a throwback to the low scoring early years of pro football. Green Bay ranked 27th in total yards and 27th in rushing yards. It scored an average of one touchdown per game. Its 134 points were the team's worst output since 1949. With such an unproductive attack, the team was fortunate to finish 4-10. The offensive woes could be traced to the preseason. New England manhandled the Packers 38-3 in a game in which Bart Starr accused Patriots coach Chuck Fairbanks of running up the score. Tampa Bay, the doormat of the league, embarrassed Green Bay 10-7 on August 20th. During the regular season, the Packers struggled with injuries and continued to be among the worst teams in the NFL. QBs Lynn Dickey and David Whitehurst combined to throw 21 interceptions while connecting on just six touchdown passes.

LYNN DICKEY AND ALL THOSE INJURIES

To say Lynn Dickey never reached his full potential in the NFL due to injuries would be an understatement. Dickey's ailments combined to cost him more than three full seasons. And it started back in college. After a stellar career at Kansas State, Dickey was selected for the 1971 Senior Bowl. Trying to impress the scouts, he failed to warm up properly and began to throw hard. A sore arm sent him from a probable first-rounder to the third round, where the Oilers selected him after taking QB Dan Pastorini in the first round. After sitting on the bench his rookie year, Dickey had a chance to start in 1972, but, in a pre-season game against the Cardinals, he tried to scramble but was grabbed from behind by a Cardinal defender. Dickey's left hipbone popped out of its socket, breaking off a piece of the socket bone and tearing ligaments in the process. A hip specialist reattached the broken piece of socket bone with two screws, and he would return to the Oilers in 1973. He started for the Packers in 1976, until the 10th game when he separated his throwing shoulder and underwent surgery in which a screw was implanted in the joint. The operation itself was routine, but the incision became infected. The following season, Ram DT Larry Brooks crashed into him on the last play of a game on November 13.  Brooks's hit shattered the tibia and fibula in Dickey's left leg, leaving his left ankle pointed in at a 90-degree angle. Doctors operated, screwing a metal plate to the broken bones to secure them while they knitted. After several months the plate was removed, and Dickey tried to run again. He worked up to a mile a day, but the pain in his leg never slackened. There was nonunion of the bones. In effect, the leg was still broken. Dickey had to undergo yet another operation, one in which a metal rod was hammered like a railroad spike down through an opening just below his knee and into his tibia. The rod strengthened the bone, but it left Dickey with such acute tendinitis in his knee that he could barely jog. Dickey went so far as to interview for a job as a sporting-goods sales rep, but he quickly dropped the idea. After missing all but a few plays of 33 consecutive games, he hobbled back into the Packers' starting lineup in November of 1979. In 1980 the rod was removed from Dickey's leg—it was his seventh operation—and the tendinitis in his knee cleared up. After his return, Dickey's injuries became less severe, if not less painful. In 1980 he had tendinitis in his right shoulder, which at times prevented him from throwing in practice. In 1981 he missed three games after getting speared in the back by Detroit's William Gay. The following summer, the back acted up, and then came a massive migraine headache the week of the Houston game to open the 1983 season. All in all, Dickey showed perseverance and determination in putting together a decent NFL career. (SOURCE: Sports Illustrated)

SUPER BOWL 12 (January 15, 1978 at New Orleans)

DALLAS COWBOYS (14-2) 27, DENVER BRONCOS (14-2) 10 - The Cowboys evened their Super Bowl record at 2-2 by defeating Denver before a sellout crowd of 75,583, plus 102,010,000 television viewers, the largest audience ever to watch a sporting event. Dallas converted two interceptions into 10 points and Efren Herrera added a 35-yard field goal for a 13-0 halftime advantage. In the third period Craig Morton engineered a drive to the Cowboys' 30 and Jim Turner's 47-yard FG made the score 13-3. After an exchange of punts, Butch Johnson made a spectacular diving catch in the end zone to complete a 45-yard pass from Roger Staubach and put the Cowboys ahead 20-3. Following Rick Upchurch's 67-yard kickoff return, Norris Weese guided the Broncos to a touchdown to cut the Dallas lead to 20-10. Dallas clinched the victory when running back Robert Newhouse tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Golden Richards with 7:04 remaining in the game. It was the first pass thrown by Newhouse since 1975. Harvey Martin and Randy White, who were named co-most valuable players, led the Cowboys' defense, which recovered four fumbles and intercepted four passes.

GREY CUP (Sunday November 27th at Montreal - 68,318)

MONTREAL ALOUETTES 41, EDMONTON ESKIMOS 6 - The Montreal Alouettes and Edmonton Eskimos met for the third time in four years in the Grey Cup final. With a record crowd of 68,318 at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, the home team did not disappoint in a rout over their Western rivals. It was Canada’s version of the Ice Bowl, as the playing surface was more ideal for hockey than football. A blizzard hit Montreal two days prior to the game, and stadium crews put salt on the field to melt the snow. But as the temperature dropped the next day, the melted snow turned into a sheet of ice. To combat the conditions, the Alouettes put staples on their shoes in order to get good traction.  The move was spearheaded by star defender Tony Proudfoot. Sonny Wade was 22 of 40 passing for 340 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once. Montreal had a total offence of 424 yards, making 21 first downs. The Eskimos were held to just 102 yards and turned the ball over 10 times, six times in the first half alone. The kicking game carried over from the 1975 Grey Cup as both Montreal’s Don Sweet and Edmonton’s Dave Cutler scored all the points in the first half. Sweet was good on three field goal attempts and missed on one for a single point. Trailing 10-0, Cutler finally put the Eskimos on the scoreboard on the final play of the second quarter, as he was good on a nine-yard field goal. Sweet booted two field goals, and Cutler kicked another before a touchdown drought spanning eight quarters between these teams in the Grey Cup was finally put to rest. Edmonton running back Angelo Santucci’s fumble set up an Alouettes scoring drive. Wade threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Peter Dalla Riva to put the Alouettes ahead 23-6. Just prior to the start of the fourth quarter Wade threw a 10-yard major to a wide-open John O’Leary, and the rout was on. Cornerback Vernon Perry returned an interception 74 yards to help set up Wade’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Bob Gaddis. Sweet added a single and field goal to complete the scoring. Sweet set a number of records in the game, including six field goals and 23 total points, records which still stand. It was the Alouettes’ third championship of the 1970s. For the Eskimos, it marked the fourth loss in five trips to the final since 1960.

THE STORY OF THE 1977 GREY CUP (Rick Matsumoto - November 2008)

The 1977 Grey Cup game in Montreal was hit with a double whammy. First, there was the transit strike that shut down the city’s subway and buses. Then, there was a massive blizzard that made travel by taxis and personal vehicles all but impossible. Snowmobiles, skis, snowshoes and, possibly, dog sleds were the more viable modes of transportation as the hometown Alouettes prepared to take on the Edmonton Eskimos in the 65th tussle for Early Grey’s chalice. Compounding the problem for the game itself was the fact that Olympic Stadium was still exposed to nature’s nastiness as the retractable Kevlar roof, which was originally supposed to be in place for the 1976 Olympic Games, was still in storage in Paris, France while city politicians and the stadium’s builder fought legal battles. So when the 68,000 Grey Cup ticket holders, most of them who had trudged through the snow on foot, arrived at the Big O they found the field looking more like the surface of the old Montreal Forum, the home of the NHL’s Canadiens, than the venue for the CFL’s championship game. Both Alouette and Eskimo players were out on the field hours before game time trying out different types of footwear as they desperately sought to find something that would give them some traction on the slippery surface. Broomball shoes, which players sometimes used on similarly icy turf, didn’t work. Others tried metal cleats, which were rarely used now that most stadiums had switched from natural grass to artificial turf. They proved useless as well. While you might think that a team from winter aware Edmonton, especially one nicknamed the Eskimos, would have a better idea of the appropriate footwear for manoeuvring in icy conditions that didn’t prove to be the case. It was left to Tony Proudfoot, a Canadian defensive back from Montreal, to find the solution that would prove to be the right answer – at least for the Alouettes. Just before the pre-game warm-up, Proudfoot spotted an electrician walking by in the tunnel outside the dressing rooms with a staple gun in hand. The proverbial light bulb when on in Proudfoot’s head. He talked the electrician – a Montrealer who was obviously an Alouettes’ fan – into lending him the tool and he fired a number staples into the tip of the rubber cleats on the soles of his shoes. Other teammates did the same thing. When the game started about half the Als had put staples in their shoes as well and by halftime most of the team had followed suit. The Eskimos, of course, were unaware of the ploy the Als had used and they were easy pickings. “With that little bit of grip it gave you extra confidence, Proudfoot recalled years later. “We really knew we had something when Gerry Dattilio caught a short pass from Sonny Wade and ran right past (Eskimos defensive back) Larry Highbaugh for a big gain. Normally, Dattilio would never have outrun the speedy Highbaugh. “That’s when we knew we had something. It was a big factor in our win.” Marv Levy, who was the Als’ head coach at the time, said he didn’t know about the staples until after the game when the media, who had spoken to Proudfoot and other players, questioned him. “But I got calls the following week from two of my friends, one a coach and the other a general manager in the NFL and they asked me what we did, how we did it,” said Levy. “I became the expert on staples in football shoes.” With their altered footwear, the Als had little trouble handling the bewildered Eskimos. Montreal jumped into a 10-0 first quarter lead as Don Sweet booted three consecutive field goals before he missed a fourth that went for a single. The Eskimos’ Dave Cutler got one of those field goals back for the only score of the second quarter. But with most of their remaining players also taking the staple gun in hand during the halftime break, the Alouettes ran away from the Eskimos in the second half. Sweet added two more field goals in the third quarter and Peter Dalla Riva and John O’Leary caught touchdown passes from quarterback Sonny Wade for a 20-point outburst. The Eskimos’ only reply was another Cutler field goal. Montreal quarterback Sonny Wade said after the game that his team won because they were able to adjusts to the conditions, not only employing the staples in their shoes, but by deciding to pass the ball. “We didn't plan to throw the ball that much, but the field conditions dictated it,” said Wade, who finished with 340 passing yards and three touchdowns and was named the game's MVP.    “When it's slippery like it was the receivers had an advantage over the defenders and we took it.” Wade connected with Bob Gaddis for a third touchdown early in the fourth quarter before Sweet concluded his scoring binge with his sixth field goal and another single that gave the Als a lopsided 41-6 victory. Sweet’s 23 points, which also include converts on all three Montreal touchdowns, still remains stapled into the CFL’s Grey Cup record book.
