1978 IN REVIEW
Youth was served, and with it came an energy that catapulted the Packers to their best start since 1962. Green Bay raced out to a 6-1 record and a three-game lead in the NFC Central before costly mistakes led to a second-half slide that caused the club (8-7-1) to miss its first trip to the playoffs in six years. Since Day One, Bart Starr had been rebuilding. The 1978 Green Bay Packers hardly resembled the group he had inherited in 1975. Only four starters from that club continued to start this season - Larry McCarren, Rich McGeorge, Willie Buchanon and Johnnie Gray. The 22 starters in 1978 averaged less than 25 years of age, the first time that had happened since the mid-1960's. In fact, only ten starters from the finale in 1977 found themselves still holding their jobs in 1978.
THE ONE-HIT WONDERS OF 1978
Randy Vanwarmer...Anita Ward...Samantha Sang...Walter Egan...Terdell Middleton...all were one-hit wonders in 1978. Middleton, an obscure running back entering the season, was the only Packer to rush for more than 1,000 yards between 1973 (John Brockington) and 1995 (Edgar Bennett). A third-round pick out of Memphis in 1977, Middleton barely made a dent his rookie year, running for 97 yards on 35 carries, a dismal 2.8 yards per carry. The leading rusher for the Packers, Barty Smith, only ran for 554 yards, so the competition in 1978 was heated. Middleton won the job coming out of training camp, and set the league on fire to start the season. Middleton ran for 94 yards in the season opener against Detroit. Game Two saw him shred the Saints for 114 yards. After two mediocre games, Middleton rumbled for 148 yards in a Week Five rematch with the Lions. Two weeks later, he exploded for 121 yards and four scores as the Packers improved to 6-1 with a 45-28 thrashing of the Seahawks. The next five weeks saw the Packers go 1-4, and Middleton failed to rush for more than 87 yards in any of the games. His last "great" performance of the season came in a key Week 13 Central Division grudge match with the Vikings. While the teams ended up in a 10-10 tie, Middleton carried the ball 39 times for 110 yard, and scored Green Bay's only touchdown. Down the stretch, Green Bay stumbled to a 1-2 record instead, and lost the division title on a tie-breaker. Middleton was held to a total of 103 yards in the three games. Despite his 1,116 yards, the Packers drafted Eddie Lee Ivery in 1979's first round, and would have relied on him as their lead back, except Ivery tore his knee up in the first game. The Packers went with a committee of backs, and Middleton only had one shining moment. In Week 11, the Packers upset the Vikings, 19-7, thanks to Middleton's 135 yards. It was his last 100-yard performance as a pro. He would run for only 45 yards the rest of the year, which saw him end with a season total of 495 yards. 1980 would not be any better. Middleton appeared in 11 games, carrying more than 10 times only once, and only accumulated 155 yards. Middleton's Packer career came to an end in 1981, when he rushed for a mere 181 yards on 53 carries, and did not score a rushing touchdown. Middleton made a comeback with Tampa Bay in 1983, but only appeared in two games, rushing twice for four yards. The following spring, he played with the Memphis Showboats (USFL). He ran for 46 yards on 18 carries, putting the finishing touches on a career that had one shining moment in the sun.

SUPER BOWL 13 (January 21, 1979 at New Orleans)
PITTSBURGH STEELERS (16-2) 35, DALLAS COWBOYS (14-4) 31 - Terry Bradshaw passed for a record four touchdowns to lead the Steelers to victory. The Steelers became the first team to win three Super Bowls, mostly because of Bradshaw's accurate arm. Bradshaw, voted the game's most valuable player, completed 17 of 30 passes for 318 yards, a personal high. Four of those passes went for touchdowns – two to John Stallworth and the third, with 26 seconds remaining in the second period, to Rocky Bleier for a 21-14 halftime lead. The Cowboys scored twice before intermission on Roger Staubach's 39-yard pass to Tony Hill and a 37-yard fumble return by linebacker Mike Hegman, who stole the ball from Bradshaw. The Steelers broke open the contest with two touchdowns in a span of 19 seconds midway through the final period. Franco Harris rambled 22 yards up the middle to give the Steelers a 28-17 lead with 7:10 left. Pittsburgh got the ball right back when Randy White fumbled the kickoff and Dennis Winston recovered for the Steelers. On first down, Bradshaw fired his fourth touchdown pass, an 18-yard pass to Lynn Swann to boost the Steelers' lead to 35-17 with 6:51 to play. The Cowboys refused to let the Steelers run away with the contest. Staubach connected with Billy Joe DuPree on a 7-yard scoring pass with 2:23 left. Then the Cowboys recovered an onside kick and Staubach took them in for another score, passing four yards to Butch Johnson with 22 seconds remaining. Bleier recovered another onside kick with 17 seconds left to seal the victory for the Steelers.

GREY CUP (Sunday November 26th at Toronto - 54,695)
EDMONTON ESKIMOS 20, MONTREAL ALOUETTES 13 - For the second time in the 1970s, the Montreal Alouettes failed to repeat as Grey Cup champions against the Edmonton Eskimos. Unlike the previous year in Montreal, the Alouettes’ offence was handcuffed by a tough Alberta Crude defence at Toronto’s Exhibition Stadium. The Eskimos jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Dave Cutler booted a 37-yard field goal to open the scoring and Jim Germany scored on a two-yard run for Edmonton’s lone touchdown. The play was set up by David Green’s fumble and a successful fake field goal by the Eskimos. Don Sweet then put the Alouettes on the scoreboard with a 32-yard field goal before the end of the first quarter. Cutler failed on a 31-yard field goal attempt late in the first half which gave the Eskimos a point. Randy Rhino then fumbled Hank Ilesic’s punt, allowing Cutler to make good on a 35-yard attempt before halftime. With the Eskimos ahead 17-3 late in the third quarter, Tom Wilkinson and Germany mishandled a hand off which Alouettes defensive tackle Gord Judges recovered on the Edmonton 10. Two plays later, Montreal quarterback Joe Barnes ran 10 yards for the major. Montreal backup quarterback Sonny Wade, like previous Grey Cups, got the call again midway through the fourth quarter and the Alouettes trailing 17-10. Vernon Perry had intercepted a Wilkinson pass, putting the Alouettes on the Edmonton 31. Montreal had to settle for a field goal by Sweet to narrow the gap to 17-13. With 90 seconds left in regulation, Wade faked a punt on third down in Montreal territory. With no receivers to throw to down field, Wade got sacked by Dave Fennell. Cutler would use the great field position to kick his fourth field goal of the game to give the Eskimos some breathing room. He was responsible for 14 of the Eskimos’ 20 points. Wade drove the Alouettes down to the Edmonton 27 with the time he had left and needed only one yard for the first down. But Wade elected to throw down field, and two incomplete passes ended any hopes of a Montreal miracle comeback. Following the game, the Grey Cup was damaged after Wilkinson accidentally dropped the trophy after being bumped by some rowdy fans. Dan Kepley caught it, but he too got knocked and the mug dropped to the turf and broke. “I shouldn’t have dropped the Grey Cup. The Alouettes hit me a lot harder than that,” said Wilkinson.
