1979 IN REVIEW
Coming off a winning season in 1978, the Packers were filled with optimism heading into the 1979 campaign. Unfortunately, the worst rushing defense in the league, the dismissal of a long-time member of the franchise, and a long list of injuries led to a dismal 5-11 record. For the first time, Bart Starr's future as head coach was being openly questioned. The only bright spots appeared to be the return of Lynn Dickey, the first win over Minnesota in five years, and the successful debut of Monday Night Football at Lambeau Field. Green Bay's defense allowed more than 150 yards rushing in 14 of the 16 games and the team went 3-11 in those contests. No other defense was rushed on as much (639 carries), and the 2,885 yards given up on the ground was the fourth-worst in NFL history up to this point. Defensive coordinator Dave Hanner was fired in December after 28 years with the Packers organization. As for injuries, the parade started in the first game when top draft choice Eddie Lee Ivery went down with a torn knee ligament. Mike Hunt, Barty Smith, Bobby Kimball and Steve Atkins were also lost for the season with various ailments. Mark Koncar (ankle), John Anderson (broken arm), Ezra Johnson (ankle), Mike Butler (elbow) and Terdell Middleton (shoulder) all missed significant playing time.
THE FIRST MONDAY NIGHT GAME IN GREEN BAY
The New England Patriots were a pre-season Super Bowl contender. The Green Bay Packers were coming off their first winning season in six years. The Packers, who some had picked to win the NFC Central, were off to a dismal 1-3 record, while the Pats were living up to their expectations at 3-1. And for the first time in franchise history, Monday Night Football was coming to Green Bay. The three previous Monday Night games in Wisconsin had all been played in Milwaukee, due to the simple fact that there were lights at County Stadium. The hype for the game was noticeable, especially since days before the game, the Brown County sheriff’s office received a death threat aimed at Cosell. With help from the FBI, Cosell was kept safe and sound. Green Bay came into the game in disarray. When Bart Starr chose to run out the clock late in a tie game in Minnesota the week before, a game the Vikings went on to win, he nearly had a locker-room mutiny on his hands. Star wide receiver James Lofton threw his pads into his locker during the Packers' postgame prayer and had words with Starr. He also dropped some passes observers felt he should have caught, leading a Green Bay newspaper to run a cartoon in which he was called a "ham-handed and overpaid receiver." Green Bay came into the Patriots game as 8 1/2 point underdogs. When Tim Fox intercepted a David Whitehurst pass in Packer territory and Steve Grogan threw a scoring pass to TE Russ Francis, it appeared the rout was on. Instead, it was the Patriots who turned into bumblers, with six turnovers. SS Johnnie Gray came up with the first of the Packers’ five interceptions, and the subsequent 41-yard, five-play drive ended FB Barty Smith dove a yard for the tying score. The Packers took the lead for good on a 74-yard drive that ended with a Whitehurst pass to WR Aundra Thompson. The victory was the highlight of a dismal 5-11 year. The season would continue to unravel, punctuated during a loss to the Jets at Green Bay in November. The fans booed Lofton for fumbling a fourth-quarter pass. His reply was a middle-finger slate. In a postgame TV interview, he said he was bleeped-off at the stupid bleeps in the stands. That prompted a Packers public-relations man to say of him, "He needs to grow up. He's a prima donna." As for the Patriots, they would bounce back to win their next three, but a losing streak late in the season sent them to a 9-7 record, and no playoff berth despite those lofty predictions.

SUPER BOWL 14 (January 20, 1980 at Pasadena)
PITTSBURGH STEELERS (14-2) 31, LOS ANGELES RAMS (11-7) 19 - Terry Bradshaw completed 14 of 21 passes for 309 yards and set two passing records as the Steelers became the first team to win four Super Bowls. Despite three interceptions by the Rams, Bradshaw kept his poise and brought the Steelers from behind twice in the second half. Trailing 13-10 at halftime, Pittsburgh went ahead 17-13 when Bradshaw hit Lynn Swann with a 47-yard touchdown pass after 2:48 of the third quarter. On the Rams' next possession Vince Ferragamo, who completed 15 of 25 passes for 212 yards, responded with a 50-yard pass to Billy Waddy that moved Los Angeles from its 26 to the Steelers' 24. On the following play, Lawrence McCutcheon connected with Ron Smith on a halfback option pass that gave the Rams a 19-17 lead. On Pittsburgh's initial possession of the final period, Bradshaw lofted a 73-yard scoring pass to John Stallworth to put the Steelers in front to stay 24-19. Franco Harris scored on a 1-yard run later in the quarter to seal the verdict. A 45-yard pass from Bradshaw to Stallworth was the key play in the drive to Harris's score. Bradshaw, the game's most valuable player for the second straight year, set career Super Bowl records for most touchdown passes (9) and most passing yards (932). Larry Anderson gave the Steelers excellent field position throughout the game with five kickoff returns for a record 162 yards.

GREY CUP (Sunday November 25th at Montreal - 65,113)
EDMONTON ESKIMOS 17, MONTREAL ALOUETTES 9 - The Edmonton Eskimos and Montreal Alouettes battled each other for the Grey Cup for the fifth time in the 1970s. With each team defeating the other on two occasions, the 1979 classic was the rubber match to determine the team of the decade. The game was played in the Alouettes’ backyard as 65,113 were in attendance at Olympic Stadium. They witnessed Edmonton quarterback Tom Wilkinson throw a 43-yard pass to a wide open Waddell Smith for the initial touchdown of the game. The Alouettes responded as Don Sweet kicked field goals from 38 and 45 yards out before halftime to cut the Montreal deficit to 7-6. Sweet would give the Alouettes their only lead of the game in the third quarter on a 29-yard field goal. But Warren Moon, who replaced Wilkinson behind centre, restored Edmonton’s lead by driving the Eskimos 75 yards in six plays, including a 33-yard touchdown pass to Tom Scott. Dave Cutler made it a 17-9 advantage for Edmonton when he booted a 38-yard field goal. Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. The Alouettes hurt their own cause as they were penalized 16 times for 145 yards. Near the end of the game, Gerry Dattilio was called for clipping on an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown by Keith Baker. The Eskimos were only penalized four times for 25 yards. Needless to say, Montreal head coach Joe Scannella wasn’t happy with the officials at the end of the game. “There has to be two teams on the field and I don’t believe we were the only team that was guilty of penalties,” Scannella fumed. Wilkinson completed six of 10 pass attempts for 107 yards. Moon was five of 11 for 96 yards. Montreal pivot Joe Barnes was 13 of 23 passing for 151 yards. The Alouettes had 21 first downs and 318 yards of total offence, compared to the Eskimos’ 16 first downs and 280 total yards. Despite losing the game, the Alouettes won all the major awards. David Green was the game’s outstanding offensive player carrying the ball 21 times for 142 yards. Montreal linebacker Tom Cousineau was named defensive player of the game, and Sweet was the top Canadian. Unlike the 1977 Ice Bowl, the game time temperature was 12 degrees Celsius in Montreal. Both the Alouettes and Eskimos appeared in the Grey Cup six times in the 1970s, with each team winning three titles.
Outstanding Offensive Player: David Green, RB, Montreal; Outstanding Defensive Player: Tom Cousineau, LB, Montreal; Outstanding Canadian: Don Sweet, K, Montreal
