1980 IN REVIEW
The Green Bay Packers' Board of Directors gave head coach Bart Starr a vote of confidence in Week Five of the season, but the speculation that Starr's tenure was coming to an end was rampant. At the end of the dismal 5-10-1 season, the Board stripped Starr of his role as general manager. The entire year was filled with soap opera-like drama. First round draft choice Bruce Clark elected to play in Canada. The exhibition opener in Canton, Ohio was called in the third quarter due to lightning. Green Bay went winless in the exhibition season for the first time since 1946. Defensive line coach Fred von Appen quit after a 38-0 pre-season loss to Denver, when lineman Ezra Johnson was seen eating a hot dog on the bench in the second half. On defense, John Meyer took over for Dave Hanner, and the team gave up 5,782 yards, the second most in franchise history. On the bright side, Lynn Dickey became the first Packer quarterback to pass for more than 3,000 yards (3,529), but the team only scored 231 points, worst among the 28 teams. A record-setting 61-7 loss to the Bears late in the season sent the team into the off-season with many more questions than answers.
CANCELLED GAMES IN NFL HISTORY
At the Hall of Fame game in 1980, the Packers and San Diego Chargers were tied 0-0 with 5:29 left when then-commissioner Pete Rozelle called it because of lightning. It was the first weather-related cancellation in NFL history. Other notable weather-related cancellations/postponements:
AUGUST 1996 - In the Bears' final preseason game against the Chiefs at Soldier Field, the heavens opened up with a deluge of rain and massive bolts of lightning striking perilously close to the stadium. The NFL officials called the game before its conclusion for safety of the fans.
AUGUST 4, 2003 - Kansas City had just taken a 9-0 lead over the Packers on a 27-yard field goal by Jose Cortez with 5:55 left in the third quarter when several lightning bolts hit near Fawcett Stadium. Play was halted for nearly one-half hour before NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue decided to cancel the remainder of the game with 5:49 remaining in the third.
2005 - The Saints played 2 pre-season games in the Louisiana Superdome before being forced to evacuate New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina. They played the rest of the season on the road, splitting their games between their temporary headquarters at San Antonio's Alamodome, and Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, and even playing their first home game at Giants Stadium.
NOVEMBER 2005 - To accommodate preparations to deal with the approach of Hurricane Wilma, the Miami Dolphins' home game against the Chiefs was moved from Sunday to Friday night. Miami had moved a 1992 game with the Patriots due to Hurricane Andrew, their 2003 game in San Diego was moved to Tempe, AZ due to wildfires, a 2004 game with the Titans was re-scheduled due to Hurricane Ivan, and later that season, a game with the Steelers was moved from 1 p.m. ET to 8:30 p.m. due to Hurricane Jeanne.
AUGUST 25, 2007 - The stadium lights dimmed while Kyle Boller's throw was in mid-air. The pass was incomplete -- just like the game. With more lightning on the way, officials decided enough was enough. The preseason game between the Ravens and Redskins was halted with 11:38 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Redskins an abbreviated 13-7 win.
SEPT 2008 - The devastation caused by Hurricane Ike forced the NFL to reschedule season opener between the Ravens and Houston for a second time, postponing the game to November 9. Ike severely damaged the roof of Houston's Reliant Stadium, making it unsafe to play. With the threat of Ike, the NFL originally pushed back the Ravens' game at Houston from Saunday afternoon to Monday night.
AND IN CANADA - 1962 GREY CUP - The game started normally on Saturday, December 1. However, by the second quarter, a thick smog started to roll in over the field, a combination of cold, moist, humid air from Lake Ontario and Toronto's pollution. The fog was thick enough that fans could not see the action on the field, receivers lost sight of the ball after it left the quarterbacks' hand, and punt returners could not find punts until they hit the ground. The fog became worse as the afternoon wore on, and with 9:29 left in the fourth quarter, the game was suspended with Winnipeg leading 28–27. The game continued the following afternoon, but there was no further scoring.

SUPER BOWL 15 (January 25, 1981 at New Orleans)
OAKLAND RAIDERS (14-5) 27, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (14-4) 10 - Jim Plunkett passed for three TDs, including an 80-yard strike to Kenny King, as the Raiders became the first wild-card team to win the Super Bowl. Plunkett's TD bomb to King – the longest play in Super Bowl history – gave Oakland a decisive 14-0 lead with nine seconds left in the first period. LB Rod Martin had set up Oakland's first touchdown, a 2-yard reception by Cliff Branch, with a 17-yard interception return to the Eagles' 30-yard line. The Eagles never recovered from that early deficit, managing only Tony Franklin's field goal (30 yards) and an 8-yard touchdown pass from Ron Jaworski to Keith Krepfle. Plunkett, who became a starter in the sixth game of the season, completed 13 of 21 for 261 yards and was named the game's most valuable player. Oakland won 9 of 11 games with Plunkett starting, but that was good enough only for second place in the AFC West, although they tied division winner San Diego with an 11-5 record. The Raiders, who had previously won Super Bowl XI over Minnesota, had to win three playoff games to get to the championship game. Oakland defeated Houston 27-7 at home followed by road victories over Cleveland (14-12) and San Diego (34-27). Oakland's Mark van Eeghen was the game's leading rusher with 75 yards on 18 carries. Philadelphia's Wilbert Montgomery led all receivers with six receptions for 91 yards. Branch had five for 67 and Harold Carmichael of Philadelphia five for 83. Martin finished with 3 interceptions, a Super Bowl record.

GREY CUP (Sunday November 23rd at Toronto - 54,661)
EDMONTON ESKIMOS 48, HAMILTON TIGER-CATS 10 - The Edmonton Eskimos continued the dominance they showed in the late 1970s into a new decade, reaching the Grey Cup final for the fourth consecutive year. The game proved to be merely a formality. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats were no match for the Eskimos, who people were beginning to label the best Canadian football team ever. The margin of victory was the largest since Queen’s University shut out the Regina Roughriders 54-0 in 1923. The 48 points scored by the Eskimos were the most by one team at the Grey Cup since the 1956 Eskimos scored 50. Statistics were just as one-sided as the scoreboard. The Ticats were limited to 12 first downs and 201 yards in total offence, compared to 31 first downs and 606 yards for the Eskimos. Warren Moon, ending his first season as a starter in the CFL, completed 21 of 33 passes for 398 yards. He connected on a couple of long passing plays in the first half; a 55-yard completion to Danny Buggs to the Hamilton goal line setting up Jim Germany’s first of his two touchdowns, and a 75-yard play with Brian Kelly for a touchdown. Tom Scott caught 12 passes for 174 yards. His three touchdown receptions set a Grey Cup record. Scott joined Hamilton’s Ross Craig (1913), Toronto’s Red Storey (1938) and Edmonton’s Jackie Parker (1956) are the only players to score three majors in a Grey Cup game. In total, 21 records were set or extended by the Eskimos and Ticats in 1980, and five were tied. Many of the Ticats were talking the talk leading up to the game but couldn’t back up their words. Hamilton running back Obie Graves predicted he would rush for 200 yards against the Eskimos but only managed 67. No player rushed for 100 yards against the Eskimos ‘Crude’ defence the entire season. Graves returned seven kick offs in the game, shattering the previous Grey Cup record of four. All of Hamilton’s points came off the foot of kicker Bernie Ruoff, who booted three field goals and missed on another attempt for a single. Edmonton’s Dave Cutler split the uprights twice and added six converts. The three-peat was the fourth in Grey Cup history, as these Eskimos matched the Eskimos’ string in 1954 to 1956. The University of Toronto (1909-1911) and Queen’s (1922-1924) were the others.
NOTES: Referee Don Barker called the game with four seconds remaining, as jubilant fans had by that point stormed the playing field...Though Eskimo fans cherish this as Edmonton's most dominating triumph and their third consecutive of a record five straight Grey Cup victories, the 1980 game was hardly a classic; it remains one of the biggest blowouts in CFL championship history. The only larger margin of victory in a Grey Cup game came in 1923 in the 11th Grey Cup, when Queen's University blanked the Regina Rugby Club 54–0...As of 2024, the 1980 game is the most recent Grey Cup in which one team did not score a touchdown. All the Tiger-Cats' points were scored by kicker Bernie Ruoff.
